Cops record statement from Zaid over remarks on Zahid’s case
Bukit Aman CID director Shuhaily Zain said police took time to confirm that the social media account belonged to the former law minister.
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim is being investigated under Section 223 of the Sedition Act.
PETALING JAYA: The police have recorded a statement from former law minister Zaid Ibrahim over his social media posts on Aug 30 about deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s conditional discharge.
In a Bernama report, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department (CID) director Shuhaily Zain said Zaid is being investigated under Section 223 of the Sedition Act.
Shuhaily said the police took some time before calling Zaid to record his statement because they needed to confirm several matters.
“Firstly, we needed to confirm that the account really belongs to him. That’s why it took us some time to call him in,” he said.
Earlier this month, Zahid was granted a conditional discharge on all 47 corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering charges involving Yayasan Akalbudi.
The Umno president had been accused of embezzling millions of ringgit from his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi, and accepting bribes for various projects during his tenure as the home minister between 2013 and 2018.
Various quarters, including government and opposition MPs, have alleged that there was government interference in Zahid’s case.
Earlier today, the police also recorded a statement from former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin over his alleged racist remarks while campaigning ahead of the recent Simpang Jeram state by-election in Johor.
Police recorded Muhyiddin’s statement at his office at the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) building.
Campaigning at a ceramah on Sept 3, the Perikatan Nasional chairman allegedly claimed that the Malays had “lost power”.
Shuhaily said both Zaid and Muhyiddin extended their full cooperation to the police.
“They answered all (our) questions. The police will investigate (these cases) and the investigation papers will be sent to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action,” he said.
