'Telur tak ada?' PM's double entendre to Mat Sabu at special cabinet meet

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appeared to make a double entendre about the egg supply shortage when greeting Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu at a special cabinet meeting in Putrajaya today.

When shaking Mohamad’s hand, Anwar (above) pointed at him and quipped “Ini telur tak ada?” (This one has no eggs?) in a northern accent, a wry smile on his face.

Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, who was standing next to Mohamad, appeared to join in the joke, but his remarks were inaudible.

The exchange was caught in videos sent by the Prime Minister’s Office to the media of ministers arriving for the special cabinet meeting after they clocked in for work earlier today.

It was reported last week that an egg supply shortage of eggs continues to plague consumers in markets across the country.

This has led to some sellers imposing limitations on how many eggs a customer can buy, in addition to higher prices.

Anwar had on Nov 26 - two days after being sworn in - said his top priority was to address the country's rising cost of living.

Meanwhile, at today’s cabinet meeting, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli also appeared to quip about wardrobe issues.

“I couldn’t find a tie (earlier),” he told Anwar while running his hands over his blue tie. Anwar was not wearing his tie.

Rafizi had been out of Parliament since 2018 and had mostly been working in the private sector.

The meeting, which is the first and attended by all the ministers, started at 10am.

The cabinet line-up, consisting of 28 ministers, including two deputy prime ministers, was announced by the prime minister on Dec 2.

Anwar himself is holding the finance portfolio, a position he previously held from 1991 to 1998.

He is the first prime minister to also have a ministerial portfolio since Najib Abdul Razak - who was also finance minister during his tenure.
