Tamarindus indica - Kerala's bitterest sourest fruit

Irrelevant Dr Mahathir should just let go his bitterness towards nemesis Anwar

By Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy

IT doesn’t matter anymore whether former twice premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has confidence in the leadership of current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Whether Dr Mahathir lacks confidence in Anwar or he simply thinks that the latter should not be the PM is unclear.

Having deliberately spoiled the chances of Anwar becoming the PM twice in the political history of the country, Dr Mahathir lacks the legitimacy or credibility to comment on Anwar.

The issue of Anwar being unfit as the finance minister under the leadership of Dr Mahathir is questionable.

One wonders how is it that Anwar can be hailed as one of best finance ministers of the country and yet Dr Mahathir describes him as a minister who blindly followed the dictates of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in managing the economy.

The entire world knows that Anwar was removed as Dr Mahathir’s deputy on trumped up charges due to the former’s popularity among the Malays in UMNO.

Dr Mahathir is essentially a person who is vindictive and wicked. Having lost his deposit in the parliamentary seat of Langkawi, he cannot digest the fact that his one-time nemesis has become the PM of the country.

After the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition won the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018, Dr Mahathir was supposed to hand over the PM’s post to Anwar after two years.

But he refused to hand over the post to Anwar by giving all kinds of lame excuses.

In the end, the Sheraton Move with the initial support of Dr Mahathir was not just to thwart the chances of Anwar becoming the PM but to ensure the political collapse of PH.

Imagine having been the prime mover behind any attempt to thwart Anwar’s chances, he has the temerity to say that Anwar might not be a suitable PM.

In essence, Dr Mahathir is sour grapes; he is a bitter old man whom I think should not be taken seriously anymore.

He has nothing but bitterness towards Anwar. Anwar just took office a few weeks ago.

The PH chairman is not boasting that he will be a great PM. But having proved his parliamentary majority right now, he is doing the right thing to politically and economically stabilise the country.

Let us give Anwar a chance to steer the country through the rough waters. Dr Mahathir should just step aside to enjoy his retirement. – Dec 27, 2022
