Treacherous Bersatu can’t champion Malay unity, says Umno veep

Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin says Bersatu has no locus standi to talk about championing unity of the ummah.

PETALING JAYA: Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin says his party rejects PAS’ formula for fostering Malay unity as it involves “saving” Bersatu, which he accused of having treachery ingrained in its character.

Khaled said Bersatu was established with the goal of weakening Umno and it did not have locus standi to talk about championing Malay unity.

“(Bersatu’s) strength is superficial. It was not born out of a struggle but through the worst betrayal in our political history,” he said in a Facebook post, referring to how the bulk of its leaders and members were formerly from Umno.

Labelling Bersatu as “anti-Umno”, Khaled said this did not reflect Malay unity.

This comes after PAS announced that it will stay the course in pushing for Muslim unity, with the hope for some “flexibility” on the part of Umno and Bersatu.

The Islamic party said this after a much-anticipated meeting which was meant to determine if it will stand by its Perikatan Nasional (PN) ally or cooperate with Umno ahead of the next general election (GE15).

In 2019, Umno and PAS had signed the Muafakat Nasional (MN) charter in their effort to unite the Malays, but this pact has taken a backseat in the past two years after PAS joined the Muhyiddin Yassin-led PN.

Khaled said Umno’s focus now was to regain its strength to become an effective representative for the Malays, adding that it would not achieve the goal through cooperation with Bersatu.

He reiterated that Umno was a political movement whose job was to manage and govern the country.

“Umno’s decisions are for the political survival and interests of the Malays. It’s strategic for the Malays to have the most dominant party in the upcoming administration,” he said.

  1. I'd love to see UMNO's destruction in GE15, but it won't happen.
