Tawfik wants to stand under PH banner in Bagan Datuk
Tawfik Ismail said he met with Pakatan Harapan leaders at the coalition’s convention last week to inform them of his intentions.
PETALING JAYA: Gerak Independent co-founder Tawfik Ismail has asked Pakatan Harapan (PH) to allow him to contest under its banner in Bagan Datuk against Umno president Ahmad Zahidi Hamidi in the general election (GE15).
He said he met some senior leaders and conveyed his request and hoped to receive a positive response soon.
“I was at Pakatan Harapan’s convention last Thursday and informed the coalition leaders of my intention.
“I am now hoping to meet PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim soon. Going against the former deputy prime minister in his own constituency is a huge challenge.
“Although I am standing as a ‘calon rakyat’ (people’s candidate), standing under the PH banner will be ideal as I am taking on a huge challenge,” he told FMT.
Tawfik, the son of Malaysia’s second deputy prime minister Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, confirmed with FMT recently that he would throw his hat into the ring against Zahid wherever the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman chose to contest.
This includes Bagan Datuk, where Zahid has been the MP since 1995 and will most certainly defend it.
“It’s time for the Malays to stand and fight for the right values,” the former Umno Sungei Benut MP said.
Last December, Tawfik and lawyer-activist Siti Kasim announced the launch of the Gerak Independent movement to promote independent candidates for GE15.
The others behind the movement include Wangsa Maju resident Raveentheran Suntheralingam, activist KJ John, and Sabah-based lawyer Roland Cheng.
They touted the movement as a third force but said they were open to forming strategic alliances with other parties or individuals.
