Stick to decision not to dissolve state assemblies, PH told

Political analyst Wong Chin Huat said having a separate election for the state would be more beneficial because it would better capture the public’s mood at different points in time.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan should stick to its initial decision and not dissolve the state assemblies in Selangor, Penang and Negeri Sembilan, says political analyst Wong Chin Huat.

He said the coalition was against having the 15th general election during the floods, so there is no reason that the state governments should have the state elections at the same time as GE15.

“The public would expect the state government to focus all their energy and resources on flood relief instead of being distracted by electioneering and campaigning,” he said during a televised programme on Astro Awani.

He added that PH would be viewed as opportunistic and hypocritical in its criticism of Barisan Nasional if the coalition changed its mind.

Wong, of Sunway University, also pointed out that having a state election separately from a national election would be more beneficial because it would better capture the public’s mood at different points in time.

“It is the midterm effect. Let’s say BN were to win GE15 and other states held their elections eight to nine months later, BN may not be able to hold on to power.”

He compared this to the midterm elections held in the United States where the party that was not affiliated with the president was more likely to do better than during the presidential election.

Wong also said that by holding the state election separately, political parties would be able to determine their weaknesses in GE15 and improve themselves to win more support.

“On these three grounds, PH should stick to its initial decision and not dissolve its state assemblies,” he said.

Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan had previously opposed dissolving the state assemblies if Parliament was dissolved this year.

Yesterday, the coalition’s chairman Anwar Ibrahim said the matter was still being discussed with the leadership of each component party.

However, the Selangor state government has obtained royal assent to serve its full term until mid-2023.
