Deepavali - Indira Gandhi - Prasana - the uselessness of IGPs

We’ll find you, Indira Gandhi tells daughter on Deepavali

M Indira Gandhi is hopeful that she will one day be reunited with her daughter Prasana Diksa.

PETALING JAYA: Amid the thanksgiving prayers and rangoli adorning the doorway this Deepavali, M Indira Gandhi has only one wish – to be reunited with her daughter, Prasana Diksa.

As she prepared for the day ahead and tried to remain cheerful for her two other children, Indira could not help but yearn for her daughter whom she had not seen for the past 13 years after her former husband, Riduan Abdullah, took the girl away.

“Prasana, by now, I’m sure you can read well.

“Know that you are not alone. Your mother and siblings are waiting for our reunion.

“No matter what, we will try to find you and we will never give up,” Indira said in a poignant message to Prasana who was taken away when she was only one year old.

Last year, Indira filed a nonfeasance suit against the government, the inspector-general of police (IGP), the police and the home ministry, citing police inaction in executing the warrant against her former husband for failing to hand over custody of their youngest daughter to her.

On Sept 7, the government lost its appeal to strike out the suit after a three-member Court of Appeal panel found no merits in the appeal and upheld the High Court’s decision to proceed with the hearing.

In 2016, the Federal Court instructed the IGP to execute the warrant of committal against Riduan after he was found guilty of contempt for not handing over Prasana.

Riduan had unilaterally converted the couple’s three children to Islam.

Prasana was a year old when Riduan took her away in 2009.

Indira said it mattered little to her if her daughter celebrated Deepavali or Hari Raya Aidilfitri, what was most important was to be together.

While Prasana’s whereabouts is unknown, Indira remained hopeful that someday she would be reunited with her daughter.
