HONG KONG, July 30 — Hundreds of Hong Kong protesters blocked train services during the early morning rush hour today, causing commuter chaos in the latest anti-government campaign to roil the former British colony.

What started three months ago as rallies against an extradition bill that would have allowed people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China for trial, has now morphed into a wider backlash against the city’s government and its political masters in Beijing.

Protests have occurred almost daily, sometimes with little notice, disrupting business, piling pressure on Hong Kong’s beleaguered government and stretching the city’s police force, which some have accused of using excessive force.

Activists blocked train doors, playing havoc with services and forcing hundreds of people to stream out of railway stations in search of alternative transport.

Hong Kong, which returned to China in 1997, is embroiled in its worst political crisis for decades after two months of increasingly violent protests that have posed one of the gravest populist challenges to Communist Party rulers in Beijing.

China yesterday reiterated its support for Hong Kong’s embattled leader, Carrie Lam, and its police and urged Hong Kong people to oppose violence.

The latest protest follows a demonstration at the Chinese-ruled city’s international airport on Friday and violent protests at the weekend when activists clashed with police who fired rubber bullets, tear gas and sponge grenades — a crowd-control weapon.

Minor scuffles broke out between protesters and commuters as some grew frustrated over the train stoppage.

“It’s so inconvenient and annoying, really. I am in hurry to work, to make a living. Will you give away your salary to me?” said a 64-year-old man surnamed Liu. — Reuters

how does eff-ing innocent everyday commuters help the protesters' cause?

As I penned before, sincere protests of civil rights and of various righteous causes have often deteriorated into plain anarchy and bloody-mindedness. This is what the Hong Kong protest is now.

Bloody-minded young brats who, I bet, do not even know what they have been protesting about, have gone amok (berserk) with their wanton anarchic illegal activities.

Blocking commuter trains is nothing more than being uncivil minded, reeking of thuggish behaviour. The end result has been to the inconvenience of innocence workers, who have to work to earn a living.

Yes, we can say those protesters have lost the plot, but alas, there is more to it, something far far more dark, dank and dangerous.

It's not difficult to work out that most of the protesters are young, initially idealistic and courageous, but now just anarchic and easily manipulated by agent provocateurs who could be from Hong Hong, Taiwan, USA and elsewhere. My money is on the Americans who are natural agent provocateurs everywhere outside the USA, and who especially today want to eff the Chinese kaukau.

I bet the mainly young protesters are either from affluent families (thus without concerns for everyday work to make a living) or funded by insidious forces.

For a start, Hong Kong was NEVER a democracy, being a Chinese backwater fishing village, followed by being a British colony for 155 years, and now (since 1997) back again under Chinese rule.

They don't realise that China remains hands-off from the current and very violent protest in Hong Kong for two main reasons, the adverse PR memory of Tiananmen, and the need to show Taiwan that the 'one nation, two systems' doctrine will also be good for Taiwan too. China only voiced her support for the Hong Kong Administrators in using as necessary the police force to subdue the violent protest.

Thus it is actually Taiwan who has brought and bought vicarious relief for the Hong Kong eff-ers who don't know their place in the China domain.

But push comes to shove, China can and will act decisively and brutally to put a stop to the arising chaos and punish the Hong Kong young brats a harsh unforgettable lesson. Let's hope reason can prevail and good sense returns.

The 'peace-maker' pretence of Mahathir

LETTER | It’s a scandal that has gone on far longer than anyone deems necessary. It has caused major tension between PKR’s leading men Azmin and Anwar, threatened the public’s trust in the stability of the ruling coalition, and cast a shadow of suspicion over everyone from political leaders to the Inspector-General of Police.

With all the havoc surrounding this latest political sex-scandal, there is but one man who maintains a wry smile behind his coy statements and ‘peace-maker’ pretences- our prime minister, Dr Mahathir Mohammad.

We know the 94-year-old prime minister is passionate about ‘righting his past wrongs’ in this “New Malaysia” However, he was only meant to act as a seat-warmer, one who sees to a smooth transition into a new era after 30 years under Barisan Nasional before handing over his premiership to a younger, more fitting contender.

Although it is common knowledge that Anwar is to be appointed as the next prime minister, rumours have it that Mahathir favours Azmin Ali, all the while hoping his son, Mukhriz Mahathir will one day take his place. 

But whoever the next leader may be, Mahathir has made it clear that he will only give up his power seat when he is sure Malaysia is in a stable place.

The sex scandal, which centres around videos allegedly featuring PKR’S deputy Azmin Ali engaging in sexual acts with another man, has rocked the nation to the core, upsetting the stability of Pakatan Harapan and the nation as a whole, representing the return of gutter politics to our beloved Malaysia.

It has put both Anwar and Azmin in precarious positions. Of course, if Azmin is ever confirmed to be the man in the video, there will be serious repercussions (just ask Anwar who spent nearly a decade in jail for charges of Sodomy). 

Anwar and Azmin have done each other no favours during this messy spat, both snidely sniping at each other, losing the public’s respect as they futilely try to disengage from gutter politics.

All this has allowed Mahathir to breathe a deep sigh of relief and wave goodbye to any pressure that was formerly being put on him to hand over leadership to either Anwar or Azmin in the near future.

Of course, as prime minister he could not remain totally silent throughout this saga, but he has kept it very short and very neutral, making statements such as “This is not a question of morals, it is a political problem. It will be handled as a political issue."

He also gave out a curt response to the claims that his stance on Azmin’s case contradicts his attitude towards the similar sodomy case with Anwar years ago. He wrote in his blog, "The action taken in 1998 was not based on the video clip. That came later. The court had already made its decision. The subsequent videos did not influence the court or anyone else. It did not influence me.” 

Besides these short responses, he has remained unusually silent, allowing the tensions to unravel on their own.

Now that we mention it, let's touch on that whole Anwar/Azmin sodomy case parallel that Mahathir felt necessary to address. If this sex-scandal seems familiar, it’s because it is. Just over 20 years ago another sodomy scandal surrounding Anwar came to light. Now I am not the conspiracy theory type, but the parallels are freakishly similar:

Anwar was a man of prime minister potential when he was accused, Azmin is now a man of growing prime minister potential. 

Mahathir was the prime minister hesitant about giving up his power when the scandal broke out 20 years ago, and here we are, once again Mahathir is the prime minister, once again he is hesitant about giving up his power. 

Back in 1998, Anwar swore the scandal was just a cruel effort by Mahathir to destroy his political career; similar sentiments apply to Azmin with even the IGP stating this scandal is a political ploy to destroy Azmin’s reputation.

Will any of Mahathir’s future PM potentials survive politically, succeeding him at a time when he is not ready to give up his control? It seems not. This sex scandal is playing into Mahathir's favour.

We are left with a nation that is disillusioned with the two men who are meant to lead the New Malaysia, a police force whose integrity is being questioned, and a Prime Minister who is sitting back and letting the tensions boil so he can play on the vulnerability of the masses.

Azmin Ali is now likely to exit PKR

I have blogged on this several times but I am now confident that collectively of the bits and pieces I have read here and there, I am absolutely certain that Azmin Ali has decided to severe his connection with Anwar Ibrahim for good.

If his Dökkálfar Dwarfs aren't up to an intra party stoush, he will migrate them out of PKR to ... you guess ... Pribumi, UMNO or Gerakan.

I think Pribumi and UMNO may be out of the question because both are a racist parties (formed by the same man Mahathir) where non-pribumi Dwarfs like Tian Chua, Xavier Jayakumar, etc won't be allowed to be members but only non-voting associates. Gerakan still looks good. The exception will be if Azmin jettisons his non-pribumi Dwarfs - with Azmin you never know.

After his very hurtful and damaging "look at yourself in the mirror" sharp riposte to Anwar, his most recent (also hurtful to Anwar) call for Mahathir to be PM for a full 5 years, his embrace of PAS Hadi Awang's suggestion for Mahathir to continue as PM (purportedly to deny non-Muslims non-Malays any stab at leading the government), and his non-attendance of PKR leadership council meetings (MPP) since his election as deputy president in November last year, one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to gauge Azmin's next move.

Azmin Ali has ONLY two options, namely, either (a) stay in PKR to fight the Pandan Cats, or (b) leave PKR.

If/when Azmin leaves and takes along around 15 to 20 MPs (plus some ADUNs) and does not join Pribumi, the Pakatan government will fall, which will be gnam gnam for the new coalition of BN-PAS, which Gerakan (under Azmin Ali) may rejoin.

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar says it will be good if the Perak government rents its unused land for agriculture as it will help boost food production.

PETALING JAYA: PSM, which has been fighting for the rights of Chemor farmers whose land has been given to the Perak football team, today denied any knowledge of any offer of alternative plots to those affected.

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar also said the party and farmers had no knowledge of any “series of discussions” that the state government had claimed it had held with the farmers who had been tilling the Chemor land for five decades.

However, he said it was still good news if indeed the Perak government was willing to offer alternative land for cultivation to the affected farmers.

“The state government should come out with an actual offer. They should send a letter to all these farmers,” he said today.

Jeyakumar was responding to the statement from the Perak menteri besar’s office yesterday that the state will offer nearby land at Tanah Hitam, Chemor, at “reasonable rental”, to the affected farmers to continue cultivating.

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has urged the Perak state government under Menteri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu not to give in to demands by DAP to grant freehold status to new villages.

This comes as DAP said Perak should go ahead in granting freehold status to new villages, and disputed a statement by Faizal on the constitutionality of doing so.New villages are usually identified with the Chinese community. The scheme was started by the British colonialists in their attempt to contain Chinese residents living near the edge of jungles, fearing they would support the communist guerillas.

Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (Amanah and former Pakatan MB for Perak in 2008) said he was able to issue freehold titles to villages during his abortive stint as Perak mentri besar in 2008, amid controversy over the state government’s refusal to do so again now.

“Anything regarding the current land issues has to be referred to Mentri Besar Ahmad Faizal Azumu,” he said.

The state Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman added that he converted 11 leasehold titles to freehold then, in Kampung Baru Kuala Rui, Gerik.

The former MB added that he gave out the titles after consulting legal experts and said plans had been in place to issue the titles to new, planned as well as Orang Asli villages.

He added that most would have been given to planned villages, with around 112,000 freehold titles and half of which would have gone to Malay residents.

The farmers had cultivate small plots of 2-5 acres (0.8ha to 2ha) each in Ulu Chemor, Hulu Kinta, for a long time and it was their only source of income.

MB Azumu (he's from Parti Pribumi) shocked the farmers with an eviction notice from the Kinta Land Office on July 5, ordering them to move out within 14 days or risk a RM500,000 fine or a jail term of up to five years.

What use does MB Azumu (you wouldn't believe it but he's part of the Pakatan coalition - makes one think he's old UMNO) have for the seized land?

On 03 May MB Azumu gifted the land to the 39 Perak footballers and officials.

So this is a Pakatan state government?

Seize land from poor farmers who worked the land for more than 40 years, so as to gift them to footballers?

Lim KS and Nga Kor Ming should be ashamed that the rakyat have been oppressed to such a stage.

And Dr Michael Jeyakumar has done a great service (which the DAP has today forgotten how to) in calling MB Azumu to his Kerbau promise in the Perak state government willing to offer alternative land for cultivation to the affected farmers.

But what worries me besides the poor oppressed and deprived farmers has been the total silence of the DAP, both federally and at state level, considering the DAP members are part of the federal government and Perak government.

Penang Prangin Canal breathes & lives again

GEORGE TOWN, July 29 — The restored Prangin Canal now teeming with fishes is the original waterway and not an installed pond as alleged on social media, Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI) said today.

Responding to posts claiming the canal was diverted underground and a pond installed to approximate it, PDC general manager Datuk Mohd Bazid Abd Kahar and GTWI general manager Ang Ming Chee both stressed the canal was the same one build nearly two centuries ago.

“The old Prangin Canal was thoroughly cleaned and rejuvenated into a water feature that flows within the new proposed park,” they said in a statement today.

Calling the allegations as misleading and false, they explained that the diversion had been installed to divert water away from the canal during the restoration.

They then urged the public to stop circulating the claims that they asserted were meant to jeopardise the project.

When contacted, Ang explained that dirty drain water that used to flow into the canal has since been diverted to a new culvert parallel to the restored waterway.

“We need to divert the drain waters from the canal so that we could restore it and preserve it as part of the Sia Boey Rejuvenation Project and the first Urban Archaeological Park,” she said, adding that the culvert also could take higher water volumes than before.

Mohd Bazid and Ang said the plans for the construction of the diversion were also presented to and approved by Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP) and the Technical Review Panel (TRP) despite being beyond the boundaries of George Town Unesco World Heritage Site.

“The Technical Review Panel committee includes Penang Heritage Trust, which is also a member of the Penang Forum coalition,” they pointed out.

They said the Prangin Canal was also not classified as a river and was not fed by a natural stream.

Before 2013, the canal had been used as a large monsoon drain running from Burmah Road and Muntri Street to Beach Street and Magazine Road.

Drain and storm water from these areas flowed into the canal before reaching the shorefront just south of Weld Quay where there is a pumping station to discharge the storm water into the sea.

“In October 2015, a granite structure was uncovered and later identified as the Old Prangin Canal Basin by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Centre for Global Archaeological Research,” they said.

The archaeological value of these findings inspired PDC, as the project owner, and GTWHI, as the project partner, to transform the site to be the first Urban Archaeological Park in Malaysia.

After the plans were presented, the Technical Review Panel (TRP) approved the rejuvenation in February 2018.

The rehabilitation took place from May till August 2018 upon the completion of the diversion in October 2016.

During the restoration and cleaning works of the canal, more than 15,000 artefacts were dug up from the site, they added.

A bio-filtration setup including bio-balls, bio-brushes, natural shells and an ultraviolet light system was installed downstream.

“The canal was cleaned and restored with a self-sustainable ecosystem so that it will remain clean and the fish will survive as long as the public do not dump rubbish into it,” Ang said.

Historically, Sia Boey, also known as Ujung Pasir or Prangin, was a natural stream surrounded by mangrove swamps that marked the borders of early 19th century George Town.

The fortification of the Prangin Canal began in 1804 and the canal was narrowed sometime in the 1890s in line with the construction of the Sia Boey Market, which demarcated the influence of the British rule on urban George Town life.

They said drawings sourced from the British Library Archive indicated that the original alignment of the canal began at the shorefront of Weld Quay and had extended all the way inland to the Penang Road/Burmah Road junction.

At that time, the canal served as a flood mitigation and a waterway, as well as to drain the swamps in surrounding areas for agriculture and residential use.

The Prangin Canal was approximately 20 feet wide and five feet deep.

The rubble pitched walls of the canal consisted of granite stones and blocks, and the invert was of concrete base overlying the silt strata beneath.

The foundation of the canal walls were founded on bakau piles supported by timber shoring, a common construction technique for many pre-war houses in George Town during that era.

The Sia Boey Rejuvenation Project was launched on 25 March 2018 to transform Sia Boey into an area that facilitates the coexistence of development and heritage conservation.

Last Saturday, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and the media visited the site to examine the progress.

Once I saw a photo of a drain-canal in Japan teeming with colourful koi and had then wished Malaysians would one day arrive at such an environmentally conscious, clean and caring state of mind and behaviour. Well, we now have. Syabas!

The Prangin Canal is something we Penangites can be truly proud of and should support the State government in looking after with loving care. But we must remind ourselves it is only the beginning and not falter after such an impressive start. We must persist and maintain such an exemplary life style.

I am amazed at the amount of work and innovation invested in rejuvenating the Prangin Canal, which I remember all too well as a school student boarding/disembarking from the Lim Seng Seng and/or Hin Company buses stationed there. The Yellow Bus Company also had its fleet parked alongside the Canal.

The Prangin Canal was then in a dirty, dingy and dreadful state, filled with stagnant, greasy and fetid water that was sodden with rubbish - and I recall that spanning the Canal was and must be the filthiest public toilet that had ever existed in Malaya-Malaysia. The beggars and homeless washed, bathed and somehow even resided in that toilet.

I am proud and very happy that the Penang State government has revived Prangin Canal to such a clean and fresh state. Once again Penang has set the example and standard. After all, The motto of the former City Council of Georgetown (1957) was 'Leading We Serve'.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali joined today Opposition parties PAS and Umno in calling for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to serve out his full term as the prime minister.
Lauding PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s endorsement on behalf of the Islamist party and Umno, Azmin said he has consistently called for Dr Mahathir to be given all five years of his mandate to rebuild Malaysia.

He also added that the two Opposition parties’ endorsement of Dr Mahathir did not mean an end to their political differences with the ruling Pakatan Harapan, saying that this could continue without harming the larger population.

“The leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir is required to ensure the stability, continuity and consistency of government policies to drive investment as well as create jobs and prosperity for all.

“I believe that political stability will build up the country's fundamentals and integrity including the concept of 'shared prosperity' that will bring Malaysia back to being an Asian Tiger,” he said in a statement today.

He said Malaysians voted in the previous general election for institutional reforms that would only be possible if there was stability in the government.

Azmin also expressed his belief that PAS and Umno’s professed support for the leadership of Dr Mahathir would usher in a new era of bipartisanship and build on the collaboration that allowed Malaysia to lower the voting age from 21 to 18.

On Saturday, Hadi said the PAS-Umno alliance was in favour of Dr Mahathir completing his full term as prime minister.

Thus Azmin Ali has shown his true colours vis-a-vis Anwar Ibrahim becoming the next PM.

Even by tokking kok about an Old Man, already semi-nyanyiok, carrying on as PM until he is 97 years old, Azmin Ali has:

(a) declared war against his old mentor and party leader Anwar,

(b) reneged on a PKR deal with Pakatan (as testified by Lim KS who assures everyone Mahathir will hand over to Anwar),

(c) severed his umbilical cord to PKR,

(d) demonstrated his complete allegiance to Mahathir (after all his uncle) and Parti Pribumi, and

(e)  even found space to embrace his old matey PAS and Mothership UMNO in another tok-kok spew about bipartisanship, implying indirectly the DAP (PAS & UMNO bete noire) can go to blaze,and also Lim KS to go eff himself with the latter's Ah Pek assurance of a cordial Mahathir-Anwar handover.
