KUALA LUMPUR — Former Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah has questioned the real motive behind the political party’s decision to sack its deputy president, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.
Saifuddin said the dismissal came just hours after 16 Members of Parliament openly urged party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down and hand over the leadership to Hamzah, raising serious questions about the timing and intent of the move.
“The action gives the impression that Muhyiddin is fearful of Hamzah’s growing influence within the party,” he said in a statement.
The Indera Mahkota MP added that if Muhyiddin genuinely still commanded strong support among party leaders and grassroots members, such a drastic measure would not have been necessary.
“If it is true that Muhyiddin retains the backing of the party, there would be no need to act in this manner. A mature political party should not be led by fear or an obsession with holding on to power,” he said.
Saifuddin further described the sacking as a reflection of weakness at the highest level of the party’s leadership.
“This decision portrays Muhyiddin as a weak and fearful leader,” he added.
For the record, Saifuddin himself previously served on Bersatu’s supreme council before being expelled from the party on January 6.
Hamzah’s removal has since triggered strong political reactions, with several MPs and opposition leaders describing it as a critical moment in Bersatu’s internal crisis. – February 13, 2026
