FMT:
Gobind’s DAP election
victory a ‘trap’ set by
rivals, claims Ramasamy
The former Penang DAP leader says Gobind Singh Deo’s victory in the recent party polls was not necessarily a testament to his popularity or family legacy.

Instead, he claims, it was just part of a “trap” set by a rival faction in the party.
Ramasamy said the most surprising outcome of the polls was Gobind’s performance in topping the CEC elections with 2,785 votes and subsequently replacing Lim Guan Eng as DAP’s national chairman.
“Despite being closely associated with Lim’s camp, Gobind secured the highest number of votes in the CEC election,” he said in a statement.
FMT previously reported that political analysts attributed Gobind’s resurgence in DAP – just months after failing to be elected to the Selangor chapter’s leadership – to a mix of merit and legacy.
The report also mentioned that Gobind topped the list of candidates in the last DAP polls in 2022.
Ramasamy, however, said a deeper analysis would suggest that Gobind’s victory was not necessarily a testament to his personal popularity or leadership qualities.
“Just months ago, he failed to get elected into the Selangor DAP leadership committee. If delegates had strictly voted along factional lines, Gobind might have struggled to even secure a spot in the CEC.
Instead, Ramasamy said, Gobind’s success appears to be the result of a “calculated political manoeuvre” by the faction led by secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and deputy chairman Nga Kor Ming.
“Recognising the need to isolate Lim, they (the faction) strategically threw their support behind Gobind,” he said.
He added that while Gobind retained votes from Lim’s faction, it was the backing of the Loke-Nga camp that propelled him to the top.
“This move ensured that Lim was sidelined without direct confrontation, as Gobind’s election was unlikely to provoke resistance from Lim’s remaining supporters.
“In the end, Gobind became chairman, while Lim was relegated to the role of party adviser – a position with little real influence,” he added.
Ramasamy highlighted that leading up to the election, Lim’s camp had actively campaigned for him, his sister Hui Ying, Gobind, and RSN Rayer.
“But it was Gobind who ultimately became the beneficiary of a political trap set by the rival faction. His family legacy and personal reputation had little to do with his victory – if they had, his failure in the Selangor state election would be hard to explain,” he said.
