Summary
- Umno Youth leader Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong engage in a heated exchange over the controversy surrounding a ham and cheese sandwich.
- Akmal accuses Woo of not understanding Muslim sensitivities, suggesting he sell ham sandwiches instead. Woo counters, urging Akmal to quit politics and become an enforcement officer if he is so concerned.
Woo stresses the importance of allowing authorities to handle the investigation.
As the debate over a “ham and cheese” sandwich intensifies, Umno Youth leader Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and DAP Youth chief Woo Kah Leong have exchanged suggestions for alternative career paths for each other.
“Go sell ham sandwiches instead, bro,” Akmal suggested to Woo if the latter is unable to understand the sensitivities of Muslims and Malays in this homeland.
“It’s better not to become a leader,” he said.
Responding to Woo’s “reminder” that politicians should not burn bridges to score political points, Akmal said this was not about being a hero.

“This is about when someone tries to deceive and betray the trust of Muslims by selling products with fake halal labels, even though they haven't obtained any halal certification at all, which is also against the law.
“Does DAP Youth support actions that are illegal?” he asked.
Woo, on the other hand, suggested that Akmal quit politics and become an “enforcement officer to raid ham-producing factories” if he is unable to comprehend simple language.
“it's better not to call oneself a defender of the people,” he said.
Woo stressed that DAP Youth has never supported any entity attempting to disrupt societal harmony.
“If any party is found guilty under the law, the entity should face the consequences.
“No member of DAP Youth has ever supported traders who deceive with halal labels. Such fraudulent traders must face legal action by the authorities based on the rule of law,” he added.
Wait for probe to complete
However, Woo pointed out it is essential to wait for investigations to be completed, rather than acting as self-proclaimed heroes or enforcers.
“Respect the rule of law. All citizens of this nation live in a diverse society with different races, religions, and cultures.
“Each has its own sensitivities and issues to address, but no one should try to usurp the role of agencies or enforcement authorities,” he added.
The war of words erupted after Woo criticised Akmal for purportedly sensationalising the KK Mart ham and cheese sandwich issue and fanning racial tensions.

Woo Kah Leong
Akmal had called it another instance of Islam being belittled.
KK Mart has clarified that the sandwich - produced by a third party - used halal-certified chicken ham, although the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) said the sandwich as a product is not certified to use the halal logo.
Defending Akmal, Umno Youth secretary Hafiz Ariffin cautioned Pakatan Harapan Youth wings to “mind their words”.
On Saturday, Universiti Malaya ordered the immediate closure of two KK Mart outlets on its campus over the sandwich packs.

kt asks:
So KK Mart has clarified that the sandwich - produced by a third party - used halal-certified chicken ham, BUT Jakim said the sandwich (including the halal-certified chicken ham, as a product is not certified to use the halal logo.
Does that mean besides the chicken-ham, the bread, cheese and spread must also be certified halal? What about air and water?
