PETALING JAYA: Selangor Umno says its former treasurer, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, seems to have ulterior motives for criticising the state chapter.

Its information chief, Zaidi Zain, said Tengku Zafrul’s claim that Selangor Umno has not done enough to revive itself after its poor performance in the 2022 general election showed the minister’s lack of awareness about the political developments in the state chapter, which Zaidi said has seen “significant progress” since the polls.

Zaidi, who is also the Bangi Umno chief, said Tengku Zafrul seemed to be “isolated and estranged” from Selangor Umno, especially as he did not discuss his allegations with any of its leaders before making them public.

“These accusations seem to have been made with a specific motive to create a negative perception, especially towards the leadership of Selangor Umno chairman Megat Zulkarnain Omardin and Selangor Umno as a whole,” he said in a statement.

“Tengku Zafrul is advised to refrain from making statements that could embarrass himself and confuse others, especially Umno members at the grassroots level.

“Instead of creating polemics that are detrimental to the party, Tengku Zafrul should use his role as the investment, trade and industry minister to play an effective role in strengthening the party alongside the state government.”

Tengku Zafrul announced his resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer on Monday after citing his inability to contribute to improving the state chapter.

The former finance minister, who was appointed the Selangor Umno treasurer last April, said he would continue to head the Kota Raja Umno branch and serve as a member of the Umno Supreme Council.

He said that while his main goal after being appointed as the Selangor Umno treasurer was to contribute to Umno’s resurgence in Selangor, the state chapter was unable to effectively carry out initiatives planned at the national level.

Yesterday, he criticised Selangor Umno for its lukewarm efforts to revive itself following its poor performance in last year’s state election.

He said the outcome of the state election in August, when Selangor Umno won just two of the 12 seats it contested, should have served as an “eye-opener”.

Tengku Zafrul has been a vocal critic of Selangor Umno since the state polls, when he said its poor showing must be considered a “final warning” to the party as it had struggled to win votes in Malay-majority areas.
