Officials seize shoes from Vern’s shop in JB
Johor state executive councillor Fared Khalid says he ordered that checks on the sale of the shoes be made at shopping malls in the state.
PETALING JAYA: The authorities in Johor have seized shoes with a logo design which has been viewed as resembling the Arabic script for the word “Allah” from a Vern’s shop in Johor Bahru.
The shoes were seized following checks by the police, state religious officials and enforcement officers of the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, said the Johor executive councillor for Islamic religious affairs, Fared Khalid.
Earlier today, Vern’s management apologised for the design, which they said could be misinterpreted. The company said it had immediately ordered sales to cease, and has offered refunds to purchasers.
Fared said he had ordered that checks on the sale of the shoes be made at shopping malls in the state. “We have seized the shoes for further investigation,” he said in a statement. He did not reveal how many pairs were seized.
Fared urged Muslims to remain calm and allow the authorities to investigate the matter.
The shoe company, Vern’s Holding Sdn Bhd, said the logo design, on the sole of a line of high-heeled shoes, could be misinterpreted. “We have absolutely no intention of designing a logo aimed at belittling or insulting any religion or belief,” the company said.
The Inspector-General of Police, Razarudin Husain, told FMT that an investigation is being carried out, with eight complaints lodged so far in Pahang, Johor, Terengganu, Kedah and Penang.
