Social media users are unforgiving about Malaysia Airlines box meals

MALAYSIA Airlines (MAS) is going through a temporary setback as they are replacing hot meals on some flights with pastries.

kt query: Temporary?

While the service of hot meals remains for longer-haul flights, netizens are still unhappy with the premium carrier for the box meals.

On Sept 1, MAS terminated its catering service partnership with Brahim’s Food Services. In response to the change, the airline clarified in its FAQ (frequent asked questions) that passengers are allowed to bring their meals on board, provided they adhere to liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) regulations.

Additionally, passengers with specific dietary or medical needs are also permitted to bring their meals, while self-heating and non-halal options are prohibited.

Although this announcement stirred controversy among passengers, The airline says it is still committed to providing in-flight meals to passengers, as the ticket price already includes the cost of onboard meals.

However, the airline is suffering backlash from users who are unsatisfied with what they are getting on board flights.

User @jalilword who is the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change managing director posted his opinion on the ‘catering’ trouble at the national airline. The post on the Twitter is dated Sept 9.

Must invest in the product. Dated cabin, lousy product. Just can’t compete. It’ll cost money though. Whilst other airlines use A350 as normal fleet, MH has that as premium fleet. Cost driven down so much to point it is no longer 5 star. Could have been a great airline with the amount of money invested thus far (mainly to bail out unfortunately). Airport has to be great so MH can compete on transit market. All the best airlines have stellar airports, Changi, Doha, Dubai, and soon Riyadh Air & King Fahd Airport.

Meanwhile, Brahim’s Holdings Bhd (BHB) said on Friday (Sept 8) it was ready to reopen negotiations with Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of MAS, to provide catering services to airlines.

BHB founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Ibrahim Ahmad said his firm was ready to continue working with the national airline if the two could reach an agreement.

“Yes, certainly. We would be happy to continue the relationship if we can come to terms on the agreement,” he claimed.

On Aug 31, the airline terminated the national carrier’s catering contract with Brahim’s Food Services Sdn Bhd (BFS).

BFS currently produces some 12,000 meals per day following MAS’ exit as a customer on Sept 1.

Brahim, which has the country’s largest in-flight catering kitchen, has a maximum capacity to produce approximately 70,000 meals per day. – Sept 10, 2023

  1. The decision to terminate the dubious Brahim contract (Pak Lah's brother's company - first awarded when Pak Lah was PM -WAKAKAKA) was a correct one, but the execution was terrible.

When you terminate a long-standing service contract, you make sure to have plenty of preparation and your replacement ready to be slot in from Day 1.
