Ex-PAS man to join Umno’s ulama council

PETALING JAYA: Former PAS leader Khairuddin Aman Razali will be a part of Umno’s council of ulama (religious scholars), says Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
In a Facebook post, Zahid said Khairuddin will be assisting Dusuki Ahmad in the council, noting that the former used to serve as the secretary of PAS’ Syura Council.
Khairuddin was a two-term Kuala Nerus MP before Parliament’s dissolution. He had defeated Umno and Amanah candidates by 8,447 votes in the 14th general election.
Last January, Khairuddin was expelled from the party’s central committee. The following month, he was sacked as secretary of the PAS Syura Council.
The former plantation industries and commodities minister had also said he would not join Umno or set up a new party after quitting PAS.
However, in the recent 15th general election, Khairuddin tried to defend his seat on a Barisan Nasional ticket. He lost to PAS’ Alias Razak.
Zahid said Dusuki is an Umno veteran and has vast experience and connections among ulama and Islamic scholars in and outside the country.
The formation of the council was first mooted at the party’s general assembly 12 years ago. During Umno’s general assembly last weekend, Zahid announced that the council will be established with Dusuki set to be its first chairman.
Dusuki is the father of Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi.
