Bersatu MP claims govt planning to undermine Malay property ownership

A Bersatu MP claimed that the government is trying to undermine Malay property ownership and demographic spread through housing policies.

This is after Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming revealed that his ministry would be meeting with contractors from Singapore's Housing and Development Board (HDB) in order to learn about the nation-state's successful public housing programme.

In a statement today, Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan warned that the fate of bumiputeras would be at risk if an HDB model is implemented in the country.

He cited Penang as a case study for his claims.

"If we study what Pakatan Harapan did in Penang after they learned from Singapore and Hong Kong, the people should be worried because the biggest group in the government today is DAP," he said.

DAP has 40 seats out of the 148 MPs backing the government, and only has four ministers in the 28-member cabinet.

Continuing his argument, Wan Saiful (above) said on Penang Island, Malay land ownership in the Timur Laut district was 1.16 percent, and 15 percent in the Barat Daya district.

He did not cite the source of his data. However, a graphic Wan Saiful shared with the figures mentioned is from a March 2018 Berita Harian interview with then Pulau Betong assemblyperson, Muhamad Farid Saad.

Farid did not explain the source of his data in the interview back then too but did say that he had conducted a study on Malay land ownership in Penang back in 2010.

Meanwhile, Wan Saiful also cited 2010 state government data that showed Malay property ownership in Penang at the time was 27 percent, compared to 55 percent owned by the Chinese.

"We need the latest data for 2023, but it clearly shows that bumiputera property ownership is lagging far behind for so long," he said.

Wan Saiful also concluded that based on a transaction involving residential, industrial and commercial complex properties recorded by the National Property Information Centre (Napic), bumiputera property ownership was at 36.3 percent.

Malaysiakini was not able to find data from the centre on this.

However, a search found a 2014 Bernama article, which stated that in 2012 data from Napic showed only 36.3 percent of transactions on residential properties involved bumiputeras.

It is unclear whether the transaction statistics took into account bumiputera-owned property that did not change hands.

In his concluding remarks, Wan Saiful claimed Harapan was trying to capitalise on a state of uncertainty.

"My friends in Bersatu have realised this and have risen. I urged the people to continue supporting our efforts on this matter," he said.

Undermining sovereignty?

Wan Saiful added that the people must also realise that Umno – Bersatu’s main rival for Malay support - is now subservient to DAP including on matters involving bumiputera property ownership.

Previously, Bersatu supreme council member Faiz Na'aman had accused Nga of undermining national sovereignty by roping HDB experts into the latter's ministry.

The source of contention appears to be an interview Nga gave Astro Awani on Jan 17, where he announced that the Singapore government had agreed to allow HDB contractors to "masuk" (join) the Local Government Development Ministry next month in order to share their expertise.

In a later statement, the Local Government Development Ministry said it would be holding a knowledge-sharing session with the Singaporean housing experts.

This was part of its efforts to study successful public housing programmes in other countries.

Actually flabbergasted that of all Bersatu kerbau-ers, Wan Saiful has been the one to emerge to propagate Tuk's wicked propaganda of "Chinese owning all the cities and towns"

  2. KT, I share your disgust where Wan Saiful is concerned considering his background.

I guess he has also been infected with PAS-mengitis.

Now, I am interested how DAP and PH will respond to this racially provocative point raised by Wan Saiful.
