Ahead of Umno AGM, Zahid warns against treachery

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi gave a special briefing to political bureaus of the party’s divisions earlier today, where he warned members against betraying the party.
Federal Territories Umno chief Johari Ghani said Zahid emphasised that he did not want to see treachery within the party as he spoke to delegates during the briefing, which is always given prior to its annual general assembly.
The Titiwangsa MP said this meant that Umno members should stick with the party when it faces “contests” of any kind.
“That was the main point – let there be no treachery (within our ranks),” he told reporters after the briefing was over.
Johari added that all delegates at the briefing had “unanimously accepted” Anwar Ibrahim’s unity government, which Umno is a part of.
Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional secretary-general Zambry Abd Kadir said Zahid briefed attendees on current political issues, adding that it was “tradition” for the party president to do so annually before the assembly.
He said Zahid would also explain Umno’s direction and policies in the current political landscape when he gives his policy speech later.
Separately, Umno information chief Isham Jalil said Zahid’s speech at the briefing was “good” and the president spoke from the heart.
He declined to reveal what Zahid had said in the briefing since it was a closed-door meeting.
