Most netizens spoke openly against giving Tengku Zafrul Aziz a Cabinet post, especially the finance portfolio, with some saying ‘not again’.

PETALING JAYA: Tengku Zafrul Aziz is trending on Twitter amid speculation that the former finance minister could be reappointed to the post in Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet.

While some were supportive, most netizens spoke openly against giving him a Cabinet post, especially the finance portfolio, with a few saying “not again”.

Twitter user @SimpletonED said the former CEO of CIMB Group Holdings Bhd was a banker by nature and could not manage the nation’s Treasury.

“Bankers can’t manage finances. They make money off loans to the rich to get richer and restrict loans to those who need (them). Say no to bankers,” he said.

Former MP Wee Choo Keong also chimed in, saying the finance ministry will become a “national disaster” if Tengku Zafrul is made the minister again, while Malaysia will turn into a “laughing stock”.

Wee, who contested the Wangsa Maju seat in the recent general election (GE15) on a Warisan ticket and lost, also said the former finance minister would have “good connections” if he managed to get reappointed to the post.

Tengku Zafrul, the Selangor Barisan Nasional treasurer, had contested for the Kuala Selangor seat in GE15 but lost to Pakatan Harapan’s Dzulkefly Ahmad.

Twitter user @Albahrui said if it was true that Tengku Zafrul would be reappointed to the post, then Anwar’s government might not last very long.

“There will be no need for the people to go out and vote. All this talk of democracy will go to waste,” he said.

Meanwhile, @kimhuam questioned how Tengku Zafrul’s name could have been considered for the highly sought-after post.

“Didn’t he lose (the contest for) his seat in GE15? What’s going on here? Say no (to) Tengku Zafrul as senator or finance minister.”

Another netizen, @SaiPan70, urged Tengku Zafrul to openly declare that he does not want to be in the Cabinet.

Yesterday, New Straits Times reported that the finance minister’s post could go to Tengku Zafrul despite PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli and former second finance minister Johari Ghani being tipped for the position.

Tengku Zafrul was first appointed to the post when Muhyiddin Yassin became prime minister in 2020. Ismail Sabri Yaakob retained him as finance minister when he took over the government in August last year.
