PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has set a hearing on March 15 next year for applications to strike out an appeal by a British lawyer who seeks to represent former prime minister Najib Razak in a corruption case.
The lawyer, King’s Counsel Jonathan Laidlaw, had filed an appeal to the Federal Court after the High Court in July had rejected his application to be admitted to the Bar, which was needed for him to represent Najib.
However, the public prosecutor, who is the Attorney-General (AG), the AG’s Chambers, the Malaysian Bar and Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee sought to strike out Laidlaw’s appeal.
The public prosecutor also filed an application to intervene in Laidlaw’s appeal.
The hearing date was confirmed by the Malaysian Bar’s lawyer Annemarie Pravina Vendargon when contacted by Bernama, following a case management of the appeal today.
In a notice of motion filed on Nov 18, the public prosecutor sought to strike out Laidlaw’s appeal on the grounds that the appeal is academic and an abuse of process and unsustainable.
Najib, 69, is serving a 12-year jail sentence after the Federal Court had in August upheld his conviction, jail sentence and RM210 million fine for misappropriation of RM42 million of SRC funds.
He has filed an application for a judicial review, which will be heard by the Federal Court for three days from Jan 19.
Najib’s lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, had said in October that Laidlaw would represent Najib if Najib succeeds in obtaining a review of the SRC appeal case.
