DAP rep elected deputy speaker of Perak assembly
Jenny Choy Tsi Jen (Pakatan Harapan-Canning) has been elected as the deputy speaker of the Perak state legislative assembly.
Choy, 34, is the second woman to be elected to the position since Hee Yit Foong in 2008.
Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (Harapan-Sungai Rapat) nominated Choy while Salbiah Mohamed (BN-Temengor) supported the nomination.
The legislative assembly today also re-elected Mohamad Zahir Abdul Khalid, 54, as its speaker.
Zahir was a former university lecturer and former two-term Kamunting assemblyperson.
Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad (BN-Kota Tampan) nominated Zahir while A Sivanesan (Harapan-Sungkai) supported.
BN and Harapan formed the state government together in Perak on Nov 21. Harapan has 24 seats in the 59-seat assembly while BN has nine.
The Perak legislative assembly meeting will continue tomorrow until next Friday (Dec 30).
Meanwhile, the Perlis legislative assembly appointed Rus'sele Eizan as their new speaker.
There are 15 seats in that legislative assembly. There is only one opposition member in the assembly - Gan Ay Ling (Harapan-Indera Kayangan).
