Why speak now of Zahid wanting help over cases, Shahril asks Muhyiddin
Shahril Hamdan has questioned Muhyiddin Yassin’s motive in making the revelation in March when campaigning in the Johor state elections.
PETALING JAYA: Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has been called out for waiting two years to reveal that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had allegedly asked him for help to resolve the latter’s ongoing criminal cases.
Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan questioned the former prime minister’s motive in making the revelation in March when campaigning in the Johor state elections.
“If this had occurred at the start of the formation of the Perikatan Nasional-led (PN) government as claimed by Muhyiddin, why did he only speak up about it during the Johor state elections, two years later?” he said in a Facebook post.
Shahril claimed that Muhyiddin only kept quiet about the matter to hold onto his position as prime minister at the time. Muhyiddin was appointed prime minister on Feb 29, 2020 and remained in the position until August last year, when he was forced to step down.
“He does not want to admit to his insincerity in getting Umno’s support just to become prime minister.
“When Umno gave him the majority, there was silence. Now that Umno no longer wants to be with them (Bersatu), then it’s a different story,” he said.
Zahid filed a suit last month against the PN chairman for repeating or publishing alleged defamatory words on social media that the Umno president sought Muhyiddin’s assistance to drop his corruption cases.
Muhyiddin was alleged to have made the claims against Zahid when campaigning for PN prior to the Johor state polls on March 12.
Zahid has denied having met Muhyiddin to seek the then prime minister’s help to resolve his ongoing criminal cases.
In the statement of claim, Zahid said the alleged defamatory words uttered by Muhyiddin implied he was not qualified to be the Umno president and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman.
He claimed the words meant that he was resorting to shortcuts to resolve his criminal cases for personal interest.
He also said there was malice in Muhyiddin coming out with the statement as PN was one of the coalitions contesting in the Johor state elections.
