PUTRAJAYA: Action can be taken against the parents of a teenager who crashed a vehicle into a tree and mowed down two grass cutters, killing one of them yesterday, says transport minister Wee Ka Siong.

“Under the Road Transport Act, whoever allows their children or any underage person to drive their vehicle can be held liable,” Wee when asked if the ministry would take action against the 16-year-old’s parents.

He said that if the case involved negligence and caused injury to another party, “strict action” can be taken against the teen’s parents as owners of the vehicle.

Wee also said that since the teenager was driving without a valid driver’s licence, any injury or damage would not be covered by insurance.

“We need to protect the safety of pedestrians,” he said.

Yesterday, a grass cutter was killed while his colleague was seriously injured after they were hit by a Perodua Alza driven by a 16-year-old boy near Semiling, Bedong.

Kuala Muda police chief Zaidy Che Hassan said the grass cutter, Myanmar national Cinglowpa, 20, died on the spot from serious head injuries. His colleague, Jamal Husson Fozol Haque, 33, suffered a broken right shoulder.

  1. I won't be surprised if the teenage rider walks away free, as the grass cutters are found to be "obstructing traffic".
