KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — Malaysians would be better off now if the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was still around, said former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

He claimed GST would have given Malaysia an additional income of RM30 billion, which would have then been used as aid for the people during these trying times.

“We collect GST when times are good, and when times are tough, we use the money to help people who are in need.

“For me, we would be better off now if GST were still around,” he said during tonight’s “Debate Perdana” with PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The unpopular GST policy was announced in 2016 by Najib’s administration and was used as a rallying point by the Opposition during campaigning for the 2018 general election.

It was discontinued once the Pakatan Harapan administration came to power and replaced with the lower percentage Sales and Services Tax (SST).

  1. Many government programs in this world sound good in theory , but prove to be disasters in practice, either by accidental or intentionally.

In the case of Najib GST implementation it was a disaster for thousands of small businesses in Malaysia. By Government intentional action, the input GST that many businesses had paid in purchasing their goods and services, and should have been reimbursed as routine practice, as deliberately withheld by Kastam.
To top it, the moneys collected , pending reimbursement had been diverted to fund General Government expenditure. The Pakatan Government was a bit overboard calling the money "stolen", but nevertheless the money had been improperly diverted. RM 20 Billion of it.
To this day Government has not paid back all the owed money.

Many small businesses had closed down as a result of Najib GST.

  3. How many of these mfers CAN think out of the box to solve economic woes?

None of them r in the calibre of Elvira Sakhipzadovna Nabiullina, the current Russian bank governor!

Neither would any of those planing for the current bolihland fiscal policies r in the mold of Lsy!

They r trained to claim old world economic tricks that have passed their useful shelf life in solving modern economic problems!

GST include. Thus the forever loops of economic failings.
