Timah is a metal, not a Muslim name, explains Tuan Ibrahim - Arabic? Confusing? Confucius?

Timah is a metal, not a Muslim name, explains Tuan Ibrahim

Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says he regrets that certain parties are attacking PAS over the Timah whisky issue.

PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader has stepped in to quell the Timah whisky controversy, clarifying that Timah means tin and is “not a Muslim name or even a person’s name”.

Deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also said that whatever the brand name or logo, liquor was still “haram” in Islam, but the rights of non-Muslims to drink it had to be taken into account.

Instead, he said, Muslims need to stay away from alcohol in all situations.

“It is better for us to educate Muslims to stay away from alcohol but the rights of non-Muslims also need to be looked at,” he said.

“The name Timah is not a Muslim name or a person’s name. It is a type of metal. Furthermore, the logo is a picture of a man. There is no man named Timah,” he told HarakahDaily.

However, he felt that the controversy was an unnecessary one. He said the use of the word “Timah” as a brand name by a local company was “confusing” and regrettable because there were parties who had used the issue to attack PAS despite the firm stand it had taken.

“The brand and logo can be confusing and PAS has consistently asked for it to be re-looked.”

PAS Youth information chief Nazir Helmi had reportedly urged the government to close down the operations of the company making Timah whisky.

He had called Timah “a catastrophe and an insult to Malaysia”.

Last Tuesday, deputy religious affairs minister Ahmad Marzuk Shaary denied that the government was involved in the production of Timah as mentioned on social media, saying it was unreasonable to make any such connection.

“Such establishments (alcohol) have been in existence in our country (for a long time), but it is not the government who releases the drinks.

“It is not an initiative of the government, and the government does not intervene in any way,” he said.
