TAR UC to get varsity status (in absence of former FM LGE)

KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) will soon gain university status.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong says it is in the midst of becoming a “full-fledged university”.

“I am confident that, under the leadership of TAR UC board of governors chairman Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and TAR UC president Prof Dr Lee Sze Wei, we will achieve this goal before long,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new student centre at TAR UC Kuala Lumpur main campus yesterday.

Dr Wee also said that cumulatively, both TAR UC and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) – another higher education institution under MCA – have a student body of 50,000.

“Together, both higher education institutions have been providing education to all Malaysians regardless of their background or who their father, grandfather or family supports. What is important is educating our children,” he said.

On a related subject, Dr Wee said the latest national budget would see more funds being channelled to different types of schools in Malaysia.

“Thank you to Tengku Zafrul who increased the amount for all schools,” he said, referring to Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

Dr Wee, who is Transport Minister, said the Finance Ministry had also given more funds to Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools.

“This is a good sign that the government gives emphasis to all schools,” he added.

On Friday, Tengku Zafrul announced that RM120mil had been set aside for 1,800 Chinese and Tamil vernacular schools in the country under Budget 2022.

These schools were allocated about RM104mil for maintenance and upgrades under Budget 2021.

Meanwhile, in a post on Facebook, Dr Wee said the student centre at TAR UC was set to also house a centre for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

“This will be a one-stop centre that aims to bring together SMEs and the supporting eco-system to synergise towards innovation and entrepreneurship for the betterment of the SMEs and the wider community.

“As one of the nation’s premier higher learning institutions, TAR UC has throughout the years been supportive towards the transformation plans set forth by the government by producing the much-needed human capital to help steer these aspirations,” he wrote.

Dr Wee said that as a result, TAR UC had proven its success over the years in understanding the human capital needs of the country.

“The setting up of the SME Centre is certainly a critical step in the right direction for TAR UC to support and develop SMEs to be the driver of growth in Malaysia.

“In the near future, TAR UC students who aspire to be entrepreneurs will be able to gain access to network connections, professional development and training or services as well as research knowledge transfer via the SME Centre to give them a leg up in their entrepreneurial journey,” he said, adding that people from all walks of life and corporations had been providing their support to TAR UC.

Dr Wee said TAR UC had shown remarkable results in various areas and it was in preparation to be upgraded to a university.

“All this is made possible with the efforts from both the teaching staff and the students as well as the support from the community,” he said.

  1. So..now MCA claims TAR UC as under MCA...

So Lim Guan Eng was not wrong when he made an issue of MCA politicisation of TAR UC...

  2. Ayam sure the timing of this "groundbreaking ceremony" and "promise" of university status has no connection with the Melaka elections in a couple of weeks. EC or MOH have no grounds to investigate.

Like "Ayam visiting as a Tourist".....says Jibby...ha ha ha...what can EC or MOH do....?

And the fact that MCA President Wee KHAT Siong praises the past MCA President Liow Tiong Lai for TARUC's "achievement" proves MCA mixes education with politics and that TARUC and MCA are one and the same.

So ayam sure the Chinese (hawkers especially) will come out in droves and vote for MCA in the Melaka elections and they will win all their seats. DAP will get a drubbing because Guanee gave 100 million to tahfiz schools.

Some universities in Malaysia gain full status from Day One, they don't even go through the UC status. Why TARUC had to transition and "prove itself" when others don't have to only MCA can answer.

And by the way some prominent DAP and PKR leaders graduated from TARUC, so patriotic....which MCA leaders attended their own university college? Or was TARUC not good enough for them?

  4. It's all related to the Malacca State Elections.
After the Elections , MCA will make Dunno when the promises get buried or progress at slower than snail's pace.
