PETALING JAYA: A former Melaka Umno assemblyman, whose membership in the party has been voided for withdrawing support for the state government, burst into tears during his press conference today.

Pantai Kundor assemblyman Nor Azman Hassan then apologised to the people of Melaka.

“I am sorry, to all the people. I’m not pretending to be crying.

“I have no personal interest in making this decision (to withdraw support for the state government),” he said today.

Azman then criticised the decision to dissolve the state assembly, making way for an election during the pandemic.

“This ‘minority’ government made a decision for their own interest, without taking into consideration Covid-19 and that the people are suffering,” Azman said.

He also insisted that he and former Melaka chief minister and Sungai Udang assemblyman Idris Haron are still Umno members as they had yet to receive their termination letters.

“The president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) cannot sack anyone as he wishes. He must ask us to appear before him first to hear our case.

“I have been an Umno member for more than 30 years. Since 2018, Idris and I have been sidelined by the state leaders. I want the president to hear what Idris and I have been through,” Azman said.

Azman said he and Idris would seek re-elections in their respective constituencies.

Idris, who was also present, said he would appeal any suspension letter from Umno.

“I want to ask the party why they are being selective in punishing us before they hear us out,” he added.

Asked if there had been any “offers” for him and Azman, Idris said he had received calls from several political leaders to join their parties but refused to disclose details.

Berita Harian had reported that they may consider offers to join a party under Pakatan Harapan but had not made a final decision yet.

Besides Azman and Idris, former DAP man Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Pengkalan Batu) and Bersatu’s Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) had retracted their support for the state government and announced they no longer supported Sulaiman Md Ali as chief minister.

After the four retracted their support, state speaker Ab Rauf Yusoh announced that the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Mohd Ali Rustam had dissolved the Melaka state assembly.

Under the law, an election has to be called within 60 days from Tuesday. Nominations and polling dates will be fixed by the Election Commission.
