KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the National Recovery Council (MPN) should be chaired by somebody other than former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin (Bersatu-Pagoh).
He said the role should be filled by another government representative as the council under Muhyiddin’s leadership had not borne results and allowed daily Covid-19 cases to increase into the tens of thousands.
Anwar pointed out that despite having all the powers during the state of emergency, Muhyiddin still allowed cases to soar and deaths to reach “world’s worst levels”.
“That’s why we told the prime minister to choose somebody else. Yes, from the government, we did not propose it be somebody from the opposition.
“Or, appoint somebody else with the experience and ability to handle the situation. Do not take the same person and expect new proposals that can solve the problem,” he said when debating the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s address in the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a question from Mukhriz Mahathir (Pejuang-Jerlun), who had asked Anwar for his thoughts on Muhyiddin’s prospects at repairing the country when he had failed in leading the country.
Earlier this morning, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob defended the decision to appoint Muhyiddin as recovery council chairman with ministerial status.
He said the appointment was made as the former prime minister had held the post since its establishment during the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s administration.
Muhyiddin has since said that he will carry out his duties as chairman on a voluntary basis and will not receive any remuneration.
