Summary
- Amanah deputy president Mujahid Yusof Rawa reminds Abdul Hadi Awang that the idea to limit the PM’s tenure was not made by DAP, and that it was agreed upon in the days of Barisan Alternatif.
- Mujahid says a limit to the PM’s tenure is necessary so that past nightmares “do not repeat themselves”.
Amanah deputy president Mujahid Yusof Rawa has reminded Abdul Hadi Awang that the idea to limit the prime minister’s tenure was agreed upon in the days of Barisan Alternatif, which PAS was part of.
Mujahid (above) questioned the PAS president’s “slip of the tongue” in targeting DAP over the proposal as if the latter had originally suggested the reform.
He pointed out that the reform proposal to limit the PM’s term is meant to prevent abuse of power and a repeat of “past nightmares”.
“Only Allah knows why Hadi failed to understand the present reality. Is he trying to defend the SG4 adviser (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) who ruled for 22 years as the prime minister? Was it because DAP raised the issue? Does the PAS president not know?
“Wasn’t Mahathir (in his 22 years as PM) once called ‘MahaFiraun’ due to alleged dictatorial traits as a result of there being no limits to his tenure?
“In actuality, the solution to the problem is to limit the tenure of the PM so that past nightmares do not repeat themselves,” Mujahid said in a statement today.

Hadi yesterday took aim at those who embraced DAP’s suggestion, saying they had forgotten or chose to ignore the fundamental principles crucial to achieving success in this world and the hereafter – that Islamic principles must guide the nation’s leadership.
“This is because this responsibility (to be prime minister) is a great trust from Allah. It is not a temporary position for one person to enjoy, and then be passed on to another to take advantage of,” he said on Facebook.
Inclusive Islamic politics
Mujahid further commented that Malaysia needs Islamic politics that is more inclusive and oriented towards local wisdom.
“We need ideas that follow current needs, the atmosphere surrounding the country in order to achieve something beneficial that develops the country are the characteristics that give birth to an Islamic political organisation that is competent, dynamic and forward-looking,” he added.
On Sunday, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke suggested the government implement several promised reforms which have yet to be fulfilled, including limiting a prime minister’s term in office.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed with the proposal.

Apart from Hadi, the remarks had also been met with a racially charged response from PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, who viewed the suggestion as an attempt by the "minority" to dictate the "majority" by dismantling the Constitution.
Another PAS leader, Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman, said the topic is open for discussion but with the condition that the prime minister position is made exclusive for Muslims.
Yesterday, PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad also pointed out that PAS had previously backed the idea of limiting the PM’s tenure when it was a member of the now-defunct Barisan Alternatif.
