FMT:
PKR’s Hassan Karim to sit
out GE16
The outspoken Pasir Gudang MP, aged 74, says he has ‘grown old’ and will make way for younger leaders.

Speaking at the Pasir Gudang PKR division’s general assembly today, the outspoken 74-year-old said he is not contesting because of his age.
“I had announced previously that I will not be running in the PKR polls this time. But that is not all, I will not be contesting in the 16th general election.
“Why have I made this decision? The answer is simply because I have grown old and wish to make way for younger leaders to take over,” he said.
On March 1, Hassan said he will not contest for a spot in the central leadership council or the chairmanship of Johor PKR, a position he held from 2014 to 2019, or any position at the divisional level.
PKR will hold its divisional elections next month, and those for the central committee in May.
Hassan also criticised the party’s decision to switch to a delegate-based voting system for both the party’s top six leaders and the 20 council members.
“I am happy that elections at the division level will continue to be held democratically with each member to get one vote.
“However, I am disappointed that the election system of the central leadership council and that of the president, deputy president and vice-presidents has been amended to a delegate-based one.
“What can I do? The special congress has made its choice. As a party member, I abide by the decision. But I am stating this in my speech for the record,” he said.
In December, PKR central leadership council member G Manivanan said while division-level elections will still follow the one-member-one-vote system, the process for electing the party’s top leadership has been amended.
Before the decision, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh also told FMT that the number of delegates would be increased significantly.
She said that out of PKR’s one million members, about 30% are active, with about 10% (or 30,000 members) forming the core group of delegates.
“Representation will take into account the size of each division, with quotas set for women and ethnic groups based on electoral demographics.
“For divisions with more than 3,000 members, additional delegates will be allocated to ensure parity,” she said.
