Even Muslims berate JAKIM’s raid which humiliates two middle-age men who ate behind closed doors

IS THIS what hard earned taxpayer monies are spent on?

A dramatic-looking video shared by Malay language news portal MalaysianGazette (@MalaysiaGazete) depicting JAKIM (Department Islamic Development) officers conducting a raid on non-fasting Muslims has earned the wrath of Muslim netizens.

Their target?

A concealed shack that was used to serve patrons a nice cuppa coffee with some toast. Alas, this included two Muslim men in their fifties. To make matter worse, the header of the MalaysianGazete was also disingenuous as it made it look like the duo was caught eating in public, not in a concealed space.

The shack kopitiam in Rembai, Malacca was apparently run by non-Muslims. The video has already generated 1.4M views with quite a few asking why so much resources were poured into this form of enforcement?

One netizen lamented that JAKIM was almost snail-like when it comes to other matters such as inheritance or land issues but were ultra-efficient when it came to catching non-fasting Muslims.

With another teased that JAKIM was even able to trace such miscreants even when shielded in such concealed premises.

One netizen suspected that it was a case of loose lips that led to the discovery of this hidden kopitiam shed.

However, there were those who felt that such middle-aged abstainers should be caught and exposed for their truancy.

With a couple even saying that such summonses be extended to those who do not observe Friday prayers which is deemed to be the “line drawn between Muslim brotherhood and infidels”.

But as one netizen pointed out, these senior citizens could well have valid excuses such as “being ill or not physically fit”. Obviously, an ambush by the authorities is certainly uncalled for.

Another commented that the two offenders seem like construction workers who could not fast due to their heavy labour.

A number of netizens made it crystal clear what they thought of this video and JAKIM’s enforcement. One contended that such “crime” was not stated in the Penal Code, hence the decision to fast or otherwise should be up to that individual.

One asked why the need to humiliate the offenders as if they were common criminals when “the All Mighty is ever forgiving”.

With a few pointing out that they were not dining in public view and thus should be left alone.

One observed that it is this culture of invasive enforcement that makes life difficult for others during Ramadan such as members of the OKU a.k.a. disabled community or pregnant women who are unfit to fast during Ramadan.

With one quite bluntly pointed out what a waste of time this exercise was.

One summed it best when highlighting that this is the consequence of JAKIM getting bored with “earning gaji buta (literally ‘blind salary or getting paid for doing very little work or nothing at all)”.
