PETALING JAYA
Heavy rain in Langkawi, Kedah, caused a water column to form at the island’s popular Telaga Tujuh waterfall, leaving multiple vehicles damaged in its wake.

The strong currents swept through the Langkawi Cable Car’s parking area at about 12.50pm, with the water level reaching 0.5m and damaging several cars parked there, Harian Metro reported.

A Nissan Almera was dragged away by the strong currents into a river – with a recording of the incident going viral on social media.

Langkawi police chief Shariman Ashari said there had been continuous heavy rain since this morning.

“Eight retail stalls located at the parking area belonging to Panorama Langkawi Sdn Bhd (the cable car operator) were also affected.

One car was swept away and found in the river, while several vehicles sustained damage. As of 5pm, no police reports have been lodged over the incident,
 he was quoted as saying.

He added that no loss of lives were reported.

Meanwhile, Langkawi Civil Defence Force (APM) officer Khairul Afzan Yasin said the situation in the area was back to normal after the rain stopped at 2.40pm.

However, he urged visitors to take precautions and be wary of the water level at the nearby river.

Separately, the meteorological department forecast thunderstorms in the whole of Kedah until 9pm tonight. Langkawi APM urged road users to drive carefully and reminded residents to look out for signs of floods.
