Israel war on Gaza: ‘Concentrated’ bombing attacks target central Gaza
- Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza reports that Israeli air attacks have pounded central areas in the Gaza Strip and eastern parts of Khan Younis in the south in what appears to be a concentration of attacks.
- After a day in which dozens were killed in Gaza, a further three people have been killed and more than 10 wounded in overnight Israeli attacks that destroyed two homes and tents sheltering displaced people in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
- Hamas has named its leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, as the movement’s new political chief to replace Ismail Haniyeh who was assassinated in Tehran in an attack widely attributed to Israel.
- Israel’s military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said in an interview that Israel remains committed to killing Sinwar following news of his election as the new leader of Hamas’s political bureau.
- At least 39,653 people have been killed and 91,535 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza.

New pressure on Israel’s Netanyahu as Sinwar become Hamas’s lead negotiator
Al Jazeera is reporting from outside Israel because it has been banned by the Israeli government.
A lot of political reaction pouring in across the Israeli political aisle.
The country’s foreign minister in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, said Yahya Sinwar’s appointment as the political head of Hamas now gives Israel more reason to assassinate him and continue their annihilation of Hamas.
There is a lot of anticipation as to what comes next and a lot of uncertainty because Sinwar’s appointment did come as a surprise.
There is also going to be immense pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from family members of Israeli captives as Sinwar is now going to be the lead negotiator for Hamas.
These are family members of captives who have been protesting for months, calling for new leadership, saying that Netanyahu should give whatever concessions to the other side in order to bring back the captives.
And it comes on the heels of an anticipated attack that could be landing in Israel at any time.

Why did Hamas elect Sinwar as its leader?
Yahya Sinwar faces huge challenges and a huge responsibility, especially at a time of war or genocide against his own people, while he is hiding in the tunnels in Gaza.
It’s very important to note that in the past six years, from 2017 to 2023, until the October 7 attacks, it was Sinwar who governed the Gaza Strip.
Gaza – a coastal enclave of 2 million people – was a well-run machine, despite the Israeli siege. Some people argue that it was better governed than the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority, in terms of everything from water to sewerage and electricity to security and order, as well as education and healthcare.
For Israel, Sinwar is the devil incarnate. For the past 10 months, the Netanyahu government has assassinated his character so well that he is now known in the world as a sort of a new Hitler, because of the October 7 operation that he led.
But once again, what happens in Gaza is a reaction to Israel’s actions.
The election of Sinwar has come as a reaction to Haniyeh’s assassination. Reactions are in general not strategy, right?
And so much of what happens in Palestine comes as a reaction to the continuous Israeli oppression, occupation and colonisation, and – as of late – genocide. And the reaction by the Palestinians is electing a very defiant, a very steadfast leader who spent many years in Israeli jails. And who today, after 10 months of genocide, is even more popular among Palestinians than before.
