“No need to be rude, childish just to gain attention,” DAP leader tells Syed Saddiq over “lapdog” accusations
A DAP lawmaker has urged Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to focus on his own court case rather than being “rude and act childishly” simply to gain attention and satiate his “hunger for fame”.
DAP central executive committee (CEC) member Howard Lee Chuan How was referring to the Muda president’s accusation that DAP has become a “lapdog” who allowed abuse of power to take place.
Syed Saddiq had also labelled DAP a hypocritical party that was power hungry and without principles.
The Muar MP had said this after DAP vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming had urged him to meet unity government leaders to voice Muda’s dissatisfaction with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for his Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.
Syed Saddiq has been vocal about the controversial move, threatening to withdraw his support for the unity government if the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) fails to explain.
“(Syed Saddiq’s) latest post on X (formerly known as Twitter) is clearly malicious and misguided when he labelled DAP a ‘lapdog’, in addition to calling the party ‘hypocrites’, ‘power-hungry’ and ‘without principles’,” Lee said in a statement last night (Sept 8).
“The strangest thing is that the one who is barking in this direction is busy calling the party that once helped him a ‘lapdog’.”
Lee, who is also the Ipoh Timor MP, stressed that DAP is a principled party and a loyal friend that had supported and assisted Syed Saddiq and his party by offering legal aid and unwavering solidarity when the latter was charged with criminal breach of trust (CBT) and money laundering.
“Syed Saddiq should just focus more on his own court case. There is no need to be rude or act childishly for the sake of gaining attention and satiating his hunger for popularity,” the Pasir Pinji assemblyman remarked.
“As a political leader and as a president of a party that is an ally of the unity government, lashing out like this does not bring any added value to Muda as a party.
“The politics of name-calling is clearly old-fashioned politics (which Syed Saddiq himself had condemned in the past) that has deviated from the new political values that Muda is fighting for.”
Coming to the defence of Nga for suggesting on Thursday (Sept 7) that Syed Saddiq refrain from airing his discontent over Zahid being granted a conditional discharge, Lee stressed that Nga’s advice was not meant to “sanctify the corrupt”.
“Nga was simply suggesting that Syed Saddiq be more professional and discuss the matter internally instead of making reckless statements and threatening to withdraw support (for the unity government,” Lee said.
He went on to describe how Syed Saddiq and Muda’s move of hurling insults at DAP was akin to “burning all existing bridges” and said they were now “gunting dalam lipatan” (loosely translated to “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, meaning, in short, a betrayer) and “parasites in the unity government”.
“Perhaps it is time for Syed Saddiq and Muda to make a firm decision and stop this game of tug-of war. Be brave; just announce your withdrawal from the unity government camp so that a seat in the Dewan Rakyat can be shifted over to the opposition side,” Lee said.
“I am confident Muda’s withdrawal of support and its absence from the unity government will make it easier for us to focus.
“Our task of building the country and taking care of the people’s welfare would be easier without the need to entertain the childishness of certain individuals and parties.” – Sept 9, 2023
