Four shot after attacking martime officer with machete

Four Vietnamese fisherfolk were shot after attacking an officer of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) with a machete this morning.

The maritime officer sustained serious injuries to his head after being hacked with a machete during a raid on a boat suspected of fishing illegally in Malaysian waters off the Kuala Terengganu coast.

The officer, Shakir Zufayri Azizul Rahman, 27, has since been airlifted via helicopter to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, Kuantan, Pahang, for treatment.

The MMEA officers raided a boat around 11.30am this morning and found 16 Vietnamese crew members.

During the inspection, the crew members suddenly attacked Shakir.

“The other officers managed to control the situation before arresting the 16 crew members (stopping them) from attacking and hurting other officers,” said Terengganu maritime director Khairul Anuar Abd Majid, as reported by Berita Harian today.

The inspection also revealed that the crew members did not have valid, relevant permits and licenses.

“All crew involved were arrested under the Fisheries Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering Malaysia without a valid pass,” he said.
