Ramasamy dropped as DAP candidate in Penang?

A party source says the Penang deputy chief minister’s aide, M Satees, will also not get to defend his state seat.

P Ramasamy’s political career has been illustrious, having served as Penang deputy chief minister and Perai assemblyman since 2008.

PETALING JAYA: Penang DAP deputy chief P Ramasamy is said to have been dropped from the party’s list of candidates for the Aug 12 state election.

The deputy chief minister’s aide, M Satees, will also not get to defend his Bagan Dalam seat, a source said.

Ramasamy was first elected Perai assemblyman in 2008 and represented the constituency for two more terms. He has also served as deputy chief minister since 2008.

Satees was elected as an assemblyman for the first time in 2018.

DAP is scheduled to announce its list of candidates in Penang at 5pm today. When contacted, Ramasamy told FMT to wait for the official announcement.

The source said Ramasamy is set to be replaced by S Sundarajoo, a former chief operating officer of Ecoworld Development Sdn Bhd who has been in the property industry for more than 31 years.

It is speculated that the deputy chief minister’s post will be taken over by Jagdeep Singh Deo, if Pakatan Harapan/Barisan Nasional wins the state in the election.

Jagdeep has held the Datok Keramat seat since 2008 and is expected to defend his seat next month.

The source said this will likely bring 74-year-old Ramasamy’s political career to an end.

The DAP leader first joined the party in 2005 after having been an academic at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia before that.

“But it can be considered an illustrious career,” the source said, noting that Ramasamy was the first Indian deputy chief minister in the country, a post he held for three terms after DAP defeated BN in the 2008 general election.

“He won the Perai seat then and held it for three terms. He was also the Batu Kawan MP for a term in 2008. Although he had asked for one more term, he can walk with his head held high as he has done much for the Indian community in Penang,” the source added.
