PM orders postponement of Kg Sg Baru development to resolve issues

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered the redevelopment project of Kampung Sungai Baru in Kuala Lumpur to be postponed to an as-yet-undetermined date.

His political secretary Azman Abidin confirmed the matter when contacted by Malaysiakini.

"The prime minister ordered that this project be postponed for a month or until a date that will be notified later.

"This is to enable a renegotiation with residents and interested parties to be carried out and to find a solution to issues raised by the residents," he said.

He said the decision was taken after the villagers asked Anwar to intervene after they were ordered to vacate their houses before January 19, 30 days after the eviction notice was issued.

On Dec 19 last year, the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory’s Department of Lands and Minerals (PTGWPKL) director-general issued an eviction notice to its occupants who are 99-year leaseholders.

This was despite the leases still having 57 years remaining.

The Kampung Sungai Baru land acquisition issue involves 67 terrace house units and 14 apartment blocks known as Sungai Baru Apartments which were part of a land acquisition process starting in 2016.

Residents, especially the residents of terrace houses, do not agree with the compensation rate of RM400 per square foot set by PTGWPKL.

A total of 37 terrace house residents disputed the fixed RM400 per square feet compensation rate, while another 27 residents agreed to it.

Residents are also asking for an extension of time to move.
