Gauge people's support for future survival, Hisham tells Umno members

BN treasurer-general Hishammuddin Hussein has urged Umno to reflect on and gauge the level of the party's support based on the outcome of the two recent Padang Serai and Tioman elections.

Taking to Facebook, the Sembrong MP said he is similarly analysing the results towards efforts to ensure the party's future survival.

"It is important to understand the dynamics of the support, particularly in working towards the party's future survival.

"What's more, it (Umno's future) heavily relies on support from loyal grassroots members, as well as overall acceptance towards BN," added Hishammuddin, who also reiterated his loyalty to the party founded by his grandfather Onn Jaafar.

"This must be given attention because I believe that in any struggle, we should never disappoint those who have been loyal to the party.

"I am someone who will fight and will continue to be steadfast for the sake of Umno - dulu, kini, selamanya (then, now and forever)," the former Umno vice-president stressed.

Delayed polling for the Padang Serai Parliament seat and Tioman state seat were held on Dec 7 after the deaths of Harapan's candidate and BN's candidate respectively prior to the 15th general election on Nov 19.

For the first time in history, BN and Harapan made way for their respective candidates to contest against Perikatan Nasional and others in the two seats, following cooperation to form the federal government.

In Tioman, BN candidate Mohd Johari Hussain retained the seat with a 573-vote majority in a five-way contest, while PN's Azman Nasruddin wrested Padang Serai from Harapan which held the seat since 2008.

Pahang BN chairperson Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail reportedly said victory in Tioman is clear proof that the people accepted the coalition's move to form a state government with Harapan.

On the other hand, PN leaders hailed the coalition's success to wrest Padang Serai from Harapan after three terms as a sign of rejection towards the federal government.

Good luck to BN colleagues

Hishammuddin also said he now has more time to contribute from outside the cabinet, at the same time wishing good luck to BN colleagues who are now a part of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration.

The former defence minister noted that Anwar's government is facing pressing challenges to handle various issues for the people, including the cost of living and the economy.

"I pray that all efforts by those who had been given trust and responsibility for the task ahead will be eased," he said.

Prior to the declaration of the formal cooperation between Pakatan Harapan and BN to form the federal government together with GPS and GRS, Hishammuddin had individually stated his objections to work with Anwar and DAP.
