KUALA LUMPUR – Newly appointed law minister, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said pledged to help address outdated laws and ensure necessary amendments to make the rule of law in the country relevant to current times.

She said that among them is the separation of powers between the attorney-general and public prosecutor to preserve the independence of the public prosecutor’s discretion.

“I will also ensure that outstanding issues, including the citizenship status of children born overseas to Malaysian mothers, will see continued progress, and, where needed, laws will be reformed to reinstate rights to the vulnerable, marginalised, and those who are not treated equally in our nation,” said the Pengerang MP in a statement.

Azalina admitted that there are many challenges that lie ahead for the unity government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, due to the impact of Covid-19 as well as the projected economic downturn next year.

“Nevertheless, I look forward to working alongside elected representatives from various parties to address the challenge that lies ahead,” she added.

In the same statement, Azalina thanked Anwar for making her part of the historical unity government formed following the result of a hung Parliament in the aftermath of the 15th general election.

She also lauded Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his “bravery and courage in taking BN to a different level of politics, and to rise above party politics, especially in this climate, to extend a hand across the aisle for the sake of nation building”.

Zahid, who was named as one of the two deputy prime ministers yesterday by Anwar, was part of the six BN lawmakers that were included among the 28 ministers inside the new unity government. – The Vibes, December 3, 2022
