Johor DAP leader: Hidden agenda behind calls for Anwar's head

Johor DAP committee member Dr Boo Cheng Hau is questioning those who are calling for Pakatan Harapan leader Anwar Ibrahim to step aside as the coalition's prime minister candidate in the wake of his latest failure to secure majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

"Many political manoeuvres were planned... to destroy the previous Harapan government so as to restore the old political order of one-race, one-party dominance.

"One has to be extremely gullible to believe that Malay supremacist parties like Umno, Bersatu, and Pejuang are three competing political entities when it is obvious they are merely a humongous conjoined triplet with the exact same political genomes," said Boo in a statement.

The former two-term Skudai state assemblyperson said the Harapan coalition of DAP, PKR, and Amanah must not fall into the trap of working with these race-based parties.

"Unfortunately, there are still elements within Harapan itself trying to pave the way for Malay supremacists to return to its fold, thinking they may be able to help the coalition get a few percentages of Malay heartland voters’ support in order to enable its return to Putrajaya.

"I would think bombastic rhetoric like “big tent” can hardly justify the hidden agenda in paving the way for Pejuang and associates to rejoin Harapan.

"They have already destabilised Harapan by directing their gunfire at Anwar and PKR rather than the present PN/BN’s ailing governance so as to divert the public’s attention from closely assessing PN/BN in managing the pandemic and socioeconomic ills," said Boo (above).

He said Anwar had been targeted for “failing to capture the government again” to undermine him and also the multicultural PKR.

"PKR has been undermined systematically by Malay supremacists within the opposition who made known they do not tolerate pluralism and multicultural politics in Malaysia," he added.

Boo said the inclusion of Bersatu, then led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, into Harapan's ‘big tent’ coalition proved to be not only detrimental to Harapan’s own credibility in its 22-month stint as federal government but the Malay-majority yet multicultural PKR which was undermined by hidden tentacles.

"It is very destructive to the effort of propelling Malaysia into a non-racial multicultural political entity, reflecting the reality of a plural society."

Boo said for the past two decades, Anwar and PKR have gone against the odds by setting up a Malay-majority multicultural party which proved to be a thorn in the side of its racist enemies.

"PKR has not only survived for more than two decades but its political domains have expanded before GE14 until working with Bersatu, which successfully enticed key leaders and legislators to turn their back on their previous convictions.

"Nonetheless, PKR’s and Anwar's resilience and commitment in non-racial, multicultural politics have been proven over a period of more than two decades," added Boo.

  1. Agong granted Anwar a pardon, just like Thai Agong granted Xavier Justo a pardon.

But “pardon” is given for the purpose of terminating or suspending a sentence, ie an amnesty, rather than revoking the conviction that the court had decided. But Pardon does not cancel the conviction. It is forgiveness of the guilt, hence the term.

Only the judiciary can revoke a conviction, the Agong can “forgive” the conviction ie pardon, but the conviction still stands, until a court reverses the conviction.

That is why even Jibby does not want Royal Pardon (a decision he may yet regret), he wants to be found innocent by the court.

    1. Justo was convicted of blackmailing ( a crime in most countries) and jailed as a common criminal. He benefited in an early release when the Thai King grant a general amnesty in conjunction with his birthday.

Anwar was jailed for sodomy which is only a crime in a few Muslim countries. He was specifically pardoned by the Agong.

The two cases were worlds apart.

  2. If you look at the previous group that was pushing hardest to push Anwar out, the agenda was actually in support of Azmin .... imagine where we would be now if they had succeeded...PKR fully aligned with Bersatu and UMNO.
