PETALING JAYA: DAP grassroots members in Bemban have expressed disappointment with Pakatan Harapan’s decision not to nominate a party representative for the Melaka election in the constituency, citing their longstanding efforts to build support for the coalition there.
In a joint statement issued by DAP’s Bemban service centre today, the members called on DAP and PH leaders to reconsider the decision and listen to members and supporters who had proven their loyalty through thick and thin.
“Bemban is not just a state seat, but a place that has seen continuous efforts from the party’s machinery, grassroots members and supporters to strengthen support for DAP and PH,” they said.
PH announced last weekend that it would contest 21 of the 28 seats up for grabs on Nov 14, leaving the seven remaining seats, including Bemban, uncontested, amid speculation of a possible understanding with Bersatu.
The DAP grassroots members said they had the support of several local party leaders who attended a recent meeting, as well as seven branch leaders in the Jasin parliamentary constituency who were unable to attend.
“These views reflect feedback received not just from those who attended the meeting, but also from the leaders of other branches in Jasin.
“The decision has made many supporters and grassroots members feel that their voices and efforts all this while have not been given fair consideration,” they said.
They said the decision also risked prompting DAP members in Jasin to resign and driving PH supporters away.
“More concerningly, some disappointed supporters have said they do not intend to vote in the coming state polls.
“These developments cannot be taken lightly. We are concerned that if this disappointment is not addressed, it will undermine the morale of the election machinery and discourage voters who have supported PH all this while from participating,” they said.
The members said they believed DAP had a support base worth serious consideration, based on recent political developments and grassroots feedback.
“We believe that a DAP representative contesting Bemban for PH can put up a great fight against the opposition, based on grassroots support and performance in previous elections,” they said.
