Indonesian authorities continue emergency response and damage assessments - February 7, 2026


THE number of people injured following a magnitude 6.4 earthquake off the coast of Pacitan in East Java early yesterday has risen to 40, while 224 people have been affected, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

BNPB’s Head of Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, said that based on situation reports as of 5pm yesterday, the earthquake impacted three regions and five districts.

“In East Java, 29 houses, one educational facility and a village hall were affected. In Central Java, 18 houses, five educational facilities, as well as one house of worship, one health facility and one public facility were reported damaged.

“Meanwhile, in Yogyakarta, eight houses were reported affected, along with government, educational, health and religious facilities,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Abdul Muhari added that emergency response operations and further data collection are still ongoing, noting that BNPB is carrying out intensive monitoring and coordination with Regional Disaster Management Agencies in the affected regions and districts.

He said BNPB is providing coordination support, strengthening the emergency response command system and ensuring the readiness of resource support according to needs on the ground. - February 7, 2026
