Hamzah’s days in Bersatu appear numbered as talk of his impending dismissal gains momentum

THE CLOCK is ticking for Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, with mounting reports suggesting his expulsion from the party could come imminently.
A report in Berita Harian today suggests that calls for firm action against the Larut MP are growing stronger. More voices spoke against the opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat, during a dialogue session with Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday in Kuala Lumpur.
“Many agree that Datuk Seri Hamzah should face action, many agree he should be expelled. Just wait a little longer, there are already calls from the grassroots,” said one source who told the Malay-language paper.
The report states that Muhyiddin has lost patience with the disruption allegedly orchestrated by Hamzah, supported by several MPs who have already been expelled from the party.
Muhyiddin, it is said, wants Bersatu rebuilt with unity and without sabotage. Tensions flared briefly at Bersatu’s eighth annual general assembly in September last year, when a small group of members heckled the party president Muhyiddin Yassin near the end of his speech.
The disruption came after Muhyiddin revealed that some members were collecting signatures to unseat him, prompting calls for his resignation.
A few delegates shouted “Turun, turun,” but the majority countered with chants of “Hidup Tan Sri,” showing support for the leader.
Party officials quickly stepped in to restore order, and the assembly proceeded without further incident.
Separately, Negeri Sembilan Bersatu chief Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker said grassroots members were furious at Hamzah’s failure to defend Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin has recently faced intense pressure from some members of the party to step down. These calls were countered by appeals by other members for Hamzah to resign as deputy president. —Feb 8, 2025
