Trump says US oil firms to head into Venezuela

WASHINGTON, Jan 4 — President Donald Trump said on yesterday he would allow American oil companies to go into Venezuela to tap its massive crude reserves after a US military operation seized its leader Nicolas Maduro.

The US military carried out a series of air strikes on Venezuela’s capital Caracas early yesterday. Maduro and his wife were captured and flown to New York City, where they face drug-trafficking and weapons charges.

“We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” Trump told a news conference in Florida.

Trump also said that “the embargo on all Venezuelan oil remains in full effect.”

Washington imposed economic sanctions on Venezuela in 2017, followed by oil sanctions two years later.

Venezuela produces just under a million barrels of crude a day, according to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and sells most of it on the black market at steep discounts.

Trump claims Caracas is using oil money to finance “drug terrorism, human trafficking, murder and kidnapping.”

At the start of his second term in 2025, he ended licenses that had allowed multinational oil and gas companies to operate in Venezuela despite the sanctions, with US company Chevron the only one to receive an exemption.

Chevron operates four oil fields in Venezuela in partnership with state-owned PDVSA and its affiliates.

Washington has also imposed a total blockade on sanctioned tankers going to and from Venezuela.

Venezuelan territory contains about 17 per cent of the world’s oil reserves, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) in 2023, but is far from being a leading producer after years of mismanagement and corruption.

Venezuelan oil is of lower quality and is mostly processed into diesel or byproducts such as asphalt, rather than gasoline. The United States has refineries around the Gulf of Mexico specifically designed to handle it.

“The United States is doing just fine without Venezuelan oil,” Stephen Schork, an analyst at consulting firm the Schork Group, told AFP last month, pointing to political reasons instead. — AFP

  1. Venezuela rampassed $5 billion of US oil assets in 1976, today worth $50 billion.

Under the presidency of Carlos Andres Perez, Venezuela nationalized its oil industry on January 1st, 1976. With this move, the country assumed control of the largest and most sophisticated petroleum complex in Latin America. The petroleum industry began to be run by Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Most affected by the takeover were American subsidiaries such as Exxon Corporation, the Gulf Oil Corporation and the Mobil Oil Corporations which had at the time invested more than $5 billion in the industry.

  2. Compare GDP per capita between Poland and Venezuela.

Poland has zero oil. Venezuela has the most in the world. In 1976 Venezuela rampassed US oil assets. See from the chart what happened to their GDP per capita. And Leftists want Venezuela to continue failing like this, rather than grow like Poland.

Venezuela used to be much wealthier than Poland, which was suffering under socialism. Then Poland implemented free-market and capitalist principles and enjoyed an economic boom.

Venezuela chose socialism, which brought poverty and misery to its people.

    That’s the difference.

    1. so, how well is Poland living as a begging dog of the Yankee?

The elites r in living joys, but the average Poles r just slightly better than the average Venezuelans.

Mom… GDP doesn't give a f*ck about the people feeding at the bottom.

This is how capitalism works, mfer

    2. Let me present a more accurate comparison of the living standard San GDP numerics.

In 1990, the Yankee's claimed 25% of the world GDP.

In 2025, the number has dropped to 15%.

Now comparing the to the T20 of the Yankee's top elites, their lifestyle, incomes etc haven't dropped as much as that 10% line. Instead, they r earning more than the dropped indicator.

Yet, the M40 & B40 r the one that suffers the most in terms of lifestyle & incomes.

      So, mfer, what gives?

Using the GDP comparison across countries, then one must use apple to apple scale.

Comparing the T20's lifestyle & incomes of A vis-a-vis B. Do the same with the M40 & B40 groupings of both countries.

Remember to factor in the PPP.

Only then, one might discover that the T20 of a developing country like India is having a much much better lifestyle & incomes as compared with the T20 of a developed country like pommieland!

Ditto with the similar results for the M40 & B40 groups of the comparing countries!

    2012: $372 billion
    2024: $120 billion

Venezuela dropping from three hundred seventy two billion in GDP to just one hundred twenty billion proves socialist policies under Chavez and Maduro crushed the economy while free markets build real wealth for people.

  11. Venezuela has 300 billion barrels of oil, the largest in the World, worth $17 trillion.

Trump says the U.S. now controls it.

The oil is worth more than the GDP of every country in the World except the U.S. and China.

Do you realize what's happening? Will this help US to settle its debt?

    1. That 300 billion barrels of oil is old old fable. No one actually tell u that most of them r just heavy residue crude, that most of the american refineries required.

The Yankee needs to buy them to sustain its oil industries. The lite shale oil has to export as the home refineries couldn't utilized them due to classic technique that required massive investments that the Yankee couldn't spared.
