WE CANNOT deny that Mamak restaurants get an unprecedented amount of love from us. From day to night, Malaysians of all walks of life could be seen enjoying roti canai or teh tarik, best when a football match is underway.
But have we ever thought about the business model that makes these Mamak restaurants so successful?
For starters, the price is affordable, making it appealing to everyone. The 24 hour service also gives us customers an unprecedented amount of convenience.
But is that all? Recently, a netizen highlighted that the success of these Mamak restaurants may be attributed to something far more sinister than just a viable business strategy.

According to @joeboyking93, black magic might be involved and it may come in the form of artworks with blasphemous mantras written on them, hung somewhere within the restaurant.
His post on X also came with several samples of these items which he called “Pelaris,” which are used to draw and retain customers.
The post has since attracted the attention of many netizens. @FlyKiteSmellAir wondered why these items were written in Arabic besides mentioning the name of Allah.
Towards her comment, @hakyne replied that such magics usually mix together the words of Al Quran and strange mantras. They also reverse the Quranic words too.
Netizen @mazin_lufiass added that the artwork can be bought even at Shopee. “The witch doctors of this era are also IT literate,” he said. Apparently, the Pelaris is applied in Thailand too, according to @ZrulIkhwan.
However, a sceptical @Zodiac_wolfpac said no one would come to a restaurant even if it had a Pelaris if the food is not tasty. Another netizen shared that these were even placed in boarding school. “Don’t read them or you will get hysterical,” he warned.

To all those roti canai and teh tarik lovers, perhaps it is time that we watch out for the presence of these Pelaris before frequenting our beloved Mamak restaurant. We wouldn’t want the devil to be whispering into our ears as we enjoy a good meal. —Jan 26, 2025
