PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s attempts to woo MCA and MIC to the opposition bloc may not necessarily be in the parties’ best interest.

Last Sunday, Tuan Ibrahim invited MCA and MIC to join PN, after several MIC and MCA state chapters pushed their parties to leave BN due to discontent over the lack of government positions.

At a press conference here, Zahid said Tuan Ibrahim’s overtures were made in his personal capacity.

Zahid, the Umno president, also said MCA and MIC’s top leaders had not discussed leaving BN with him or tabled the matter for discussion at the BN Supreme Council meeting.

“I am aware of efforts to entice our friends in BN’s component parties with offers that may not necessarily bring any real benefit to them,” he said without elaborating.

Zahid, who is also the deputy prime minister and rural and regional development minister, was speaking to reporters after the monthly assembly of the rural and regional development ministry here.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong told The Straits Times in June that 191 MCA division assemblies would “talk about the future and direction of the party” and bring their proposals to their annual general meeting in October.

MIC recently said it was prepared to engage in discussions with any political party to ensure its survival and better serve the Indian community.

However, analysts have cautioned both MCA and MIC against leaving BN due to its diminished political standing.
