KOTA KINABALU, Sept 22 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) today warned that it may initiate contempt of court proceedings against Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal over remarks he made about the Zara Qairina inquest at a political event over the weekend.
In a statement, the AGC said it took Shafie’s comments seriously as they had the potential to mislead the public and interfere with the ongoing judicial process.
“Such statements have the potential to create inaccurate perceptions among the public and disrupt the smooth conduct of ongoing court proceedings.
“Accordingly, this department is carefully reviewing the contents of the statement and stresses that it will not hesitate to take firm action under the law, including initiating contempt of court proceedings once the review is completed,” it said.
The AGC also reminded members of the public not to make statements that could cause confusion or interfere with the inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara, which has been ongoing at the Kota Kinabalu Coroner’s Court for the past two weeks.
Shafie, speaking at a Warisan event, “Jelajah Inspirasi DSSA P187”, in Kinabatangan on September 20, described Zara’s death as “murder” and questioned the conduct of the authorities despite the inquest still being in progress.
His comments have since drawn sharp criticism from lawyers involved in the case, who described them as inflammatory and disrespectful to both the court and Zara’s grieving family.
