DAP lawmaker V Papparaidu has criticised Perak PAS Youth chief Hafez Sabri for allegedly racialising the incident where a woman ambushed the Perak ruler on Aug 31.

Describing Hafez’s statement as racist and irresponsible, Papparaidu said the Manjoi assemblyperson’s remarks could jeopardise harmony and public order.

“As an elected leader, he should be showing a good example to the people.

“Issuing statements without verifying facts not only can confuse the public but also cause animosity among multi-racial Malaysia,” said the Banting assemblyperson in a statement today.

Yesterday, the police dismissed a viral Facebook post claiming that a Chinese woman was arrested after storming the stage towards Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah during a state-level National Day celebration.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department director M Kumar said the claim was false, and confirmed that the arrest involved a 41-year-old Malay woman.

“Police issued a stern warning that firm action without compromise will be taken against anyone who deliberately makes or spreads false statements that cause public fear and disturb social harmony,” he added.

Hafez issued an apology for the post, claiming it had been manipulated by irresponsible parties.

He explained that he wrote the post immediately after the incident, fearing for the sultan’s safety as well as questioning how such a security breach could have happened.

He said the post was written with initial information he obtained that claimed the suspect was a Chinese woman, adding that he corrected the post within minutes after realising the error.

Let cops investigate

Papparaidu urged everyone to allow the authorities to conduct their investigation into the matter.

The Selangor state executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication added that no one should allow political interests to jeopardise the unity Malaysians have upheld for the past 68 years.

“And I stress that racialising an incident is both unfair and dangerous.

“It could create a misunderstanding that an entire race is responsible for an incident, although the act was perpetrated by a certain individual,” he added.

It should be noted that the Penang and Negeri Sembilan branches of DAP Youth had lodged police reports over the issue, urging the authorities to investigate Hafez.
