Family submits memo to Kelantan govt over tahfiz student’s death

PETALING JAYA: The family of a former tahfiz student has submitted a memorandum to the Kelantan government demanding clarity about the circumstances surrounding his death 12 years ago.

Tengku Shazuan Tengku Shariffudin, who is leading a team of 10 lawyers representing Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman’s family, said the memorandum outlined several key concerns, including the demolition of the crime scene – the hostel toilet where Wan Faris’s body was discovered two to three weeks after his death – without reasonable justification.

In a report in Kosmo, Tengku Shazuan also said the tahfiz school’s failure to provide records of its student movements, and the lack of investigation into a fight that allegedly occurred before the discovery of Wan Faris’s body, were also highlighted in the memorandum.


The memorandum was handed to the state government as the incident took place at a tahfiz school under the supervision of the Kelantan Islamic Foundation, which falls under the state government’s jurisdiction.

It was received by Anas Rizuan Shamsuddin, special officer to the chairman of the state education, higher education, green technology, digital and innovation committee, in front of the Kota Darulnaim Complex in Kota Bharu.


Wan Faris’s body was found by a dormitory supervisor on Dec 14, 2013, after he detected an odour coming from a toilet at the dormitory.

An autopsy classified it as sudden death and ruled out any criminal involvement. However, a coroner’s court ruled in June 2016 that he was murdered by an unidentified person.

Last month, Wan Faris’s family filed a civil suit against the government claiming negligence and breach of statutory duty in relation to the investigations into his death.
