While Congress is expected to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election, the rest of Washington, D.C., has largely been shut down by a snowstorm that battered much of the mid-Atlantic on Monday.
The first major snowstorm of the winter for Washington dumped several inches of snow overnight and is expected to build up through the rest of the day, totaling roughly 6 to 10 inches of snow during the storm.
The winter weather caused all school districts in the Washington area, including in neighboring Virginia and Maryland, to close on Monday, while the federal offices in the metropolitan area were closed.
“Federal Offices in the Washington, DC area are Closed. Maximum Telework is in effect,” an alert from the federal Office of Personnel Management said.
Congress, which is not under the jurisdiction of the OPM, is still planning on convening for the lawfully mandated session to certify the election results at 1 p.m.

Indonesia, the world's fourth most-populous nation, had previously expressed its desire to join the group as a means of strengthening emerging countries and furthering the interests of the so-called Global South.
Brazil, which holds the bloc's presidency in 2025, said the member states approved Indonesia's entry by consensus as part of an expansion push initially approved at the bloc's 2023 summit in Johannesburg.
The South American nation noted that Indonesia's bid got the green light from the bloc in 2023 but the Asian country asked to join following the presidential election held last year. President Prabowo Subianto took office in October.

Donald Trump Jr. is expected to visit Greenland on Tuesday, a local government official told Reuters two weeks after Trump's father, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, expressed interest in gaining control over the vast Arctic island.
No meetings were scheduled with representatives of the Greenlandic government, the island's permanent secretary for foreign affairs, Mininnguaq Kleist, told Reuters: "We have not been briefed on the nature of his program, and therefore this is a private visit."
A source familiar with the trip told Reuters that Trump Jr. is planning a one-day visit to shoot video content for a podcast and that he would not meet with any government officials or political figures.
The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I swear it's not just because I married and successfully rewilded a Canadian that I'm utterly fascinated by Trump's Narrative Deployments regarding our northern frenemies, and their seismic Actual effects on the nation, which is itself simply another in a long line of (probably) Prussian Proxy States that owe loyalty (quite literally) to the British Crown.

My friend Chris Paul has been talking about the original Articles of Confederation quite a bit lately, and there was an interesting almost-path for Canada in that brief window of history. Either way, Trump is saying more than we think when it comes to what defines sovereign "Statehood."
What's more, as I said a few weeks back, Trump v. Trudeau was little more than the latest in a long line of Shadows on the Wall deployments meant to demonstrate emphatically to the globalist would-be ruling class that many of their prized puppets are now marching to the beat of patriot drums, by hook or by crook.
Trudeau's ouster by the Canadian political class (read: British Royals,) was expected, even planned, not unlike Joe Biden.
Oh ... and what's that? A Sovereign Alliance comm tucked neatly in the middle?
Trudeau capitulated, and has been ushered offstage. Zelenskyy will do the same. And then Starmer, Macron, and on and on.
The vampires in various parliamentary buildings on either side of the sea will not be granted the same opportunity, I'd expect.
