Israel’s war on Gaza live: Snipers fire at fleeing Palestinians
- Several civilians fleeing Gaza City have said that people have been shot dead while they were leaving the city, according to a Gaza journalist.
- Bodies are “filling the streets” in Gaza City and at least 30 Palestinians have been killed as Israeli soldiers storm the Tal al-Hawa neighbourhood of the city, says Gaza Civil Defence spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal.
- The forced displacement of Gaza City residents is causing “mass suffering”, a UN spokesperson says. More than 300,000 Palestinians are estimated to reside in the north of the war-torn territory, according to the UN.
- Gaza’s Interior Ministry says Israeli orders for Palestinians to leave the city are a form of “psychological warfare” against civilians as they have nowhere safe to go.
- Ceasefire talks continue in Qatar as efforts to end the nine-month war are hampered by Israeli attacks on UN facilities and schools in Gaza, and as mass forced displacement intensifies and hospitals are forced to close.
- At least 38,295 people have been killed and 88,241 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza
Israeli military keeps hitting UNRWA headquarters, claims to kill Hamas officials
The Israeli military confirms in its daily operational report that its commando brigade continues to operate at the headquarters of the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in central Gaza.
It claims that its soldiers have found weapons, explosives and drones at the site in the past day, and that its warplanes hit Hamas fighters in the area.
Israel has targeted hundreds of UN buildings, hospitals and schools claiming they were used by Palestinian fighters for military purposes. But it providing no proof to back its claims. Israeli forces destroyed large parts of Al-Shifa Hospital – the enclave’s largest medical facility – last November saying it housed Hamas command centre. But media reports and rights groups said Israeli claims were not true.
The Israeli military added it worked with internal security organisation Shin Bet to launch an airstrike in central Gaza that allegedly killed a senior official in the internal security apparatus of Hamas.
It also claimed to kill a team leader in the military intelligence unit of the Palestinian group. The Hamas group has yet to comment on it.
It confirmed its ground forces continue with their invasion of Rafah, where they allegedly killed “dozens” of Palestinian fighters in the last day with help from airstrikes.
Which countries receive the most military aid from the US?
Israel
Since the founding of Israel in 1948, it has been the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign aid, receiving about $300bn (adjusted for inflation) in total economic and military assistance.
Roughly $220bn (74 percent) has been in the form of military aid, while the remaining $80bn (26 percent) has been economic aid.
Since 2008, Israel has received mostly military aid with economic aid accounting for less than 1 percent of total US aid to Israel.
Ukraine
Ukraine has also received a large amount of military aid from the US. Most recently, a $300m emergency military aid package was approved in March to replace depleted military stock in its continuing war with Russia.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine more than two years ago, the US Congress has approved five aid packages for the country totalling $175bn. The most recent legislation was passed in April 2024.
